Question of the day: 01/05/10
« on: January 05, 2010, 10:02:35 am »
Unemployment.
If you were let go would you file for unemployment?
How do you feel about unemployment?

I was just added to the "let go" club and was wondering about this. I would have never thought about it but my boss (er, um, ex boss) told me to file. Thoughts please.

i was laid off by a job

well most of the ppl working there were let go because of the bad economy and it was a new place tho

but if i worked there longer at the job i would have filed for unemployment

i hear it helps because u still get paid for at least a year i think

Definitely apply for unemployment. You get benefits (and if it is the same as in Iowa) you have to complete so many job searches a week. You can get direct deposit(which is nice). My hubby was fired and he fought for unemployment, but did not get it. He finally found a seasonal job but it doesn't pay near as well and we have benefits from it. It is definitely worth it and if you get a job right away, you don't have to be on it long. I also heard at Iowa Workforce, you have I think 5 months where if you are offered a job, you do not have to take anything but 100% of what you were making and still qualify for unemployment.

Heck, take the unemployment!  Government handouts have gotten so plush these days, they pay typically 50% of what you're used to making, so long as you're actively searching for work.

Uh yeah, the benefits devrived from the program was your hard earned dollars. You know that feeling you get when you see your gross income versus your net income? This is especially true if you're single with no children and no house.
The EDD collects enough money from you so you should file and I would file today. It takes a few weeks to settle your case and receiving your first payment. There is a new law the have extended the length of the benefits. You may benefit from this is you paid enough taxes in the past years. If you are planning to go back to school, you should call and them which program will qualify for extension. This is keep your benefits steady while you are looking for that new job.
When it comes to these government programs, we are entitle to it when we paid for it. Some program are free money that you may not know that you have directly paid into but you have! The workers may act like we are asking for free money but we are know that it's not free.
