Facebook Privacy Setting Question (Please help!)

I know that Facebook is fairly customizable, but I'm not familiar with all of the settings.

Here's what I want to do:

I want to make it so certain people that I will become friends with only have limited access to my profile, even after they are my friends. As in, there are parts of my profile that I would like to keep private from them.

However, I want my current friends to be able to see all of my profile that they currently see.

I haven't been on facebook for awhile but I'm pretty sure if you create Groups and then put the friends in specific ones you can then block out certain groups and/or say only certain groups can view this and that.  For instance i have Top Friends and they are the only ones who can see my telephoen number etc i blocked everyone else from viewing that
