Mostly depends on the type of headache.  If it's due to dehydration, I make sure I take in a steady stream of water - not too much too fast or it goes right through you (kind of like trying to pour water on a dry sponge) and be sure I rest/take it easy.

If it's stress related, I try to relax, and may drink a cup of coffee - let the bit of caffeine open up the blood vessels a bit to relieve the pressure.

If it's muscle tension, I use a heating pad and massage to try to relax the muscles.

Sometimes if I can't get the source headache to go away, it expands to a migraine (typically my tension headaches do this).  When the headaches start to get really bad, I'll try to take a nap and use a cold compress to try to reduce the inflammation.  If that doesn't do it, then I'll take an ibuprofin (Advil is my choice), and sleep.

I rarely need to take the medicine if I can help it, just once in a while if the headache keeps me from sleeping it off or I just can't stand the pain (start to get nauseous, etc).

I have a similar method to my madness... If I know what is causing it, I'll try to use something that targets the cause to get rid of the headache. However stress and sometimes muscle tension (esp. if the stress is causing my muscles to tighten up) I'll probably use Advil or Aleve. Usually the stress is from something at work, and I have to be clear-headed at work instead of trying to ignore pain from a headache. Although caffeine may sometimes help, I've found that it is sometimes the source of the problem in that I'll have consumed a bunch of caffeine the previous days (maybe pulling an all-nighter for a project at work), and then get headaches afterwards from caffeine withdrawal. I also get a lot of headaches from eye-strain. If this is the case, usually it can be solved by getting away from the computer and looking at bigger objects. But again if work dictates that I'm unable to do this, I'll have to take something until the end of the day when I can rest my eyes.
