Pet Owners
« on: March 18, 2012, 04:17:42 am »
I love my dog to death, but she now has fleas and its so bad that she's starting to pull her hair out. I've tried everything from Capstar, Advantix, frontline to professional grooming. I wash her blanket in hot water with bleach . I have someone spray the patio twice a week and the yard, and still no luck. I've tried putting oils on her such as lavender. The steamed lemon spray where u put lemon in hot water over night added brewers yeast and small amounts of garlic and still nothing. Can anyone help me.

The best thing I found is Revolution.  I have used it for a few years and no fleas.  It is only available at a vet's office.  It also have the heartworm prevention in it.  You only apply once a month on the nap of their neck.  You can't give them a bath for 3 days before or 3 days after application.  It is kinda expensive but it does work.  Not one flea was found on my dog.  Good luck.

Take her to the vet!!! This could turn really bad!!!!!!!!!!! My cat did that once and I found out he was highly allergic to fleas the poor little guy was miserable. Get some hydrocortisone shampoo and give a bath to your pet with it to stop the itching. That will give some relief. If your pet has had this for awhile it may need some antibiotics. Exterminate every area the dog frequents and wash with hot water and detergent all of her things. I hope this helps you. :dog: :dog: :dog:

Washing the bedding and treating the dog at this point will do nothing. With an infestation as bad as your's sounds, you also have to majorly treat your home and any other possible areas where the dog hangs out. Fleas lay eggs that are in capsules. These capsules can survive [almost] forever. When temperature and environment are just right, they will hatch into larva and grow into fleas. So not only do you have to get rid of the adults on your dog, you have to get rid of all the eggs and larva in the dog's environment.

The fleas actually only spend 10% of their time on your dog in order to feed. The other 90% of the time they are busy laying eggs and making new 'homes' all over your house. I agree, you need to get this dog to the vet and pronto. Fleas that bad often lead to Giardia and tapeworms in your animal and only a vet can test for and treat those conditions. Please do not put anymore chemicals on that poor pup! Everything you are putting on is also being absorbed by the organs via the pores in the skin and since the chemicals are poison, you are poisoning your animal too.
You are entitled to your own opinion, but you are not entitled to your own facts.

I agree! I use frontline on my dog, which works great for her. I would recommend you keep her/him on a regiment of heart worm pills because flee bites can turn into intestinal worms and that is hard to get rid of and can be extremely dangerous for dogs. Wash everthing she comes in contact with, I have heard tide is good for just about everything!!Good luck

This is exactly right.  Even your lawn.  And it does sound like your dog is allergic to the fleas.   I have a dog that licks the hair off of her feet for no reason other than it seems to be when she is bored, so I know it is worrysome.

This is going to sound so strange, but get some 20 Mule Team Borax. You can put it in the carpet  and then vacuum it (I do mine over night, but it will work in for a few hours.) Also, wash all of the dog bedding in it and I sprinkle some inside my dog's bed. The borax cuts the flea bodies both the adult ones and then any eggs when they hatch. It's amazing and you'll be really surprised. I moved into a house last year that was infested. My dog was protected with his treatment, but still got bit. I bombed with fogger just for fleas, but they came back. The borax did the trick and it's non-harmful for your dog and yourself.  Good luck!
