When you make your own nut butters other than peanut butter, do you use raw nuts or roasted?  I bought some almond butter once that tasted nasty.  The oil had separated and was floating on the top, which I had to stir up each time I opened the jar.  Those of you who have made your own, does this happen to yours as well?

Thanks Vicogden for posting the recipe link. I have made made PB. We have a health food store nearby that sells nuts in bulk. It is more costly than Skippy or Jiff put diffidently  has a more peanuty taste. I found 1 of the keys is to add the oil first than slowly add the peanuts. My husband loves it!

I have never made my own peanut butter but that is a great idea!  And yeah you could probably use google for recipes and get a ton of them!

I've never made peanut butter, but I imagine with the recipe at hand, it wouldn't be too complicated. I do like to eat peanut butter, however; specially in peanut butter-jelly sandwiches. Just talking about it made me hungry. Also if you haven't tried it, Chocolate syrup or melted chocolate and peanut butter sandwiches are also awesome. Now let me go get me some sandwiches :D

Has anyone ever made their own peanut butter? Has anyone ever tried any other kinds of "butters", like almond butter? I want to make my own peanut butter and I'd really like to make almond butter, cashew butter, and any other kind I could. I think they'd be really good!

i can't say i have, but i just saw a demonstration on tv from one of the shopping network with  vitamix blender making peanut butter, and it looks really good and healthy.

I seriously doubt that I could make peanut butter that would taste better than Jif.

Nope.  Sure haven't but you make me curious about it.  Peanut butter is just getting so expensive I am wondering how much it costs to make it at home.  Even though I feel sure it wouldn't taste as good.

:cat:Yes I have made my own peanut butter. It is a rather simple, easy thing to do with a good blender or food processor and it does allow you to control the sugar and salt content. If you find that it is too bland without the added salt and sugar, you can add in small amounts adjusting to taste. It will be far less then the manufacturers use and if you us sea salt (use far less) and natural sweeteners - like honey, agave or raw sugar. Peanuts are higher in fat than some nuts and you will most likely find yourself pouring off some of the oil when blending or after jarring. Some nuts, like walnuts and almond have additional healthy benefits like omega 3 and help with weight lose but how much of any nut you eat in a single day is important too. ;)

Yes! I also add some oil to make it easier to spread.
