Take him out to a play or give a little party for him.

Cash or a gift card is the best option these days. That way, you grandson can buy what he wants and you know he'll enjoy it! If you haven;t got a specific item in mind, it's definitely the best way to go.

My oldest grandson just turned 12.     We give each of the guys a small gift for their birthday.  Such as he loves frozen yogurt.  So we give him a credit/gift card to Menchie's.  You can get the card for any place they like, and usually add money on it when it runs out if you would like.  Then I put a little in each of their (we set them up with an account that buys stocks weekly, I send a minimum of $5.00 per week))  accounts every month.  I have 5 grandchildren, so it depends on the month from $5.00 to $10.00 each.   They won't need the money for quite a few years, but it makes better money than a regular savings account.  If your grandchildren are like mine, they have plenty of everything they need, so this is just money for school.  If they don't go to college they can access it at 22.

   I love it when the little sweethearts just want to hang out with you.  We get our 12 year old grandson every chance we can, because he is just about to be at that age where they don't won't to be with family, just their friends.    I love it when they are small and you go crazy to get the perfect gift and they only want to play with the box you wrapped it in.    I remember getting a couple of things that came in large boxes and the one that is 12 now asked if he could have the boxes, like they were a real treasure (to him they were)!

How about a hand-made coupon book redeemable for your time competing with him in the computer game of his choice?

What I do for my grand children is I send them each a cute gift card and there mom takes them to the store and they pick what every they want. They have fun being able to shop and being able to pay for there item. Good luck  8)

I'd give him cash because children like having the freedom to choose what they want.  I still remember times when I was a child and someone spent money on me when they had no clue what I would want.

Have a great day!

Video games are very expensive.  My suggestion would be to give them money, though only as much as you can afford.  For years I've always gotten $20 as my birthday gift.  Even now, at 23, I still get $20 from my aunts and uncles.  If nothing, it teaches the kid to save their money so they can get what they want later.  And, most likely, the game they want will go down in price into a few months, so he might learn that holding off on buying certain items can cause them to decrease in price.

Some people get annoyed when they receive money instead of an item, but personally, I would rather get cash that I can spend on whatever I want instead of an item I didn't want/don't like or a giftcard to a store I don't go to.

Another thing, if you do get them a game, please look at the label.  I've seen way too many kids playing games that the kid really should not be playing at that age.  I'm amazed how many 10 year old kids I've heard playing games that are rated T or even M.
