Healthy food choices? What should I put on the grocery list??
« on: December 12, 2014, 08:44:53 pm »
My sister who is mentally challenged is living in her own house with some caregivers but they told her that she needs to create her own grocery list. For the last few months she has been choosing unhealthy things and has gained a lot of weight. so I am trying to help her create a new grocery list with healthy choices. What should I put on the grocery list??

Well,I usually have Miso Soup with long grain brown rice added. I put some Wakame (a seaweed) in if I can afford it, but Kale is also just as good and somewhat cheaper.

Google JediJohnnie and May the Force be with you!

Most of my grocery list is fresh fruit and vegetables. Organic, if at all possible.

Ganoderma Lucidum is the king of herbs and a must have. Here is a list of some of the health benefits.

*Cardiovascular benefits
Ganoderma is said to inhibit the platelets aggregation and reduce the blood pressure.

Ganoderma Lucidum
*Enhance blood sugar balance

Ganoderma has blood-sugar lowering effect and this is due to the polysaccharides referred to as the Ganoderma A, B, C. Ganoderma has the capability to enhance plasma insulin levels, increase the glucose liver metabolism, and enhance peripheral tissue and its utilization of glucose.

*Anti-inflammatory effects
Hot water extracts from Ganoderma have an anti-inflammatory effect.

*Liver protector
Ganoderma is used due to its liver protection ability, that is, hepatoprotective.

*Oxygenation
Another unique advantage of ganoderma is its usefulness in altitude sickness. Ganoderma reduces illness casued by altitude through oxygenating blood.

However taking ganoderma supplements has its risks.
*Disadvantages of taking Ganoderma Lucidum

Some individuals are allergic to ganoderma and its components. They tend to experience hypersensitivity to the ganoderma components. Other familiar side effects to those hypersensitive individuals include an itchy, red kin rash

Fruit, Yogurt, & Oatmeal mixed together makes a fat burning meal, also nutritious & filling.   Greek yogurt is good for fat burning/losing weight as well.

A good healthy fat burning snack is about a cup of fruit with about 15 almonds.  The balance of fat, protein, carbs is the trick.   Great snack inbetween meals.

Good luck to your sister!   :)

Peanut butter for protein.
Sweet potatoes. You can bake them or make french fries with them, and they're better for you than white potatoes.

Frozen fruit is easy to keep for a long time and you can make smoothies with them.

In addition to the fruit and veggies, I'd suggest an assortment of herbs and spices if she doesn't have any. I'd rather use those than straight salt and pepper. As for a meat, I'd suggest chicken... It can be used in so many different dishes, pairs well with most veggies, and is relatively inexpensive (compared with other meats). Depending on the extent of her handicap, I'd suggest boneless, skinless chicken *bleep* so that it doesn't take much to prep the chicken for a meal.

Make a list of the items and let her choose or check off what she wants.  You can control what you put on the list.
