Debate & Discuss / Re: summer school
« on: May 16, 2013, 03:04:07 am »Message ID: 737379
I really think they need to move to a year round system. The need for being out of school in the summer has long gone away. Many countries do this and teach between 180-220 days a year, yet they take 4 to 6 week breaks for a vacation. The South Korean school year starts in March. They have a 4-week vacation in August, and then another break right around Christmas or just after until the first part of February. They go back for about 2 weeks to finish end of year stuff, like cleaning their classroom (the students in all South Korean schools stay in the same classroom all year, the teachers are the ones who change.), getting new room assignments for the next year, graduations (all grades within a school have a graduation of some sort). The another 2-week break until the first part of March

I have heard of schools in Colorado and in Washington State going to a year long format. I hope the trend continues.

I checked it out, but when I heard it costs $25 to get started I lost interest.  I"ve heard of too many deals where you pay money to find out how to sell the process to others.   ::)

Thanks for your input, I agree 100%. The ones that make me angry are when they say it's absolutely free. After you sign up, they hit you with well you really need your own website. (Can't use your own, You have to use their websites but don't worry it's only $29 a month). You really need an auto-responder. (can't use your own, you have to theirs, but don't worry it's only $19 a month).

I didn't want burst the bubble, but I am glad someone did. Maybe I will give it another try with the fusion cash payment or NOT!

Off-Topic / Re: Most Misused Words in the English Language
« on: May 15, 2013, 02:59:03 am »Message ID: 736915
These are all good ones.  I'm a grammar and spelling junkie, too.  I am puzzled by hearing people say it doesn't matter.  Recently I read that a company had several hundred jobs openings and did not find a single application that did not contain spelling and grammar errors.  My pet peeve is your and you're.  It is unbelievable how many high school and college graduates use those two words wrong.

To be continued......

I agree 1000%.
As a teacher of students who learn English as a Foreign Language and English as a Second Language, I want the students to start off on the right foot and learn punctuation, spelling and writing well. I think it is crucial. Now I don't expect them to know how to spell every word, so I do not give spelling tests. I spend more time giving them the tools to find out how to spell a word and use it correctly in a sentence.

Spelling and punctuation count. Consider the following:

A. It's time to eat Grandma.
B. It's time to eat, Grandma.

Join my quest! Let's eliminate the grandma eaters of the world!  I will be happy to proofread your work. You can find me online.
You might even be to able to make an educated guess at my g-mail.

I received a note from my foster son's teacher and oh my God! She misspelled/misused 9 of 13 words in the note.

The handwritten note reads as follows:

You're sons' continence has bin changed to April 3th 2:15
Plasee call me if you're cant com than. Thx.

She is a kindergarten teacher, but still.
I requested the vice principal join us for the conference and he did. Afterwards, we had a meeting of our own. I had all intentions of moving my son to a difference class but the vice-principal replaced the teacher. I was the tenth parent to raise concerns about this teacher. I show the note to the vice-principal and he laughs. Then he asks, "Can I keep this?"

Back to the topic. The rules are not always the same. In England, they use possessives and contractions a bit differently.

For example they use:
1) Jack's going to the store for Jack is going to the store.
2) It's James's book. (I was taught to write, "It's James' book."

I admit freely, I still have trouble.

I have tried to research the correct use for it's, its'.

Again, I was taught:

It's = It is
Its' = possesive pronoun. The dog chases its' tail.
I see alot of people use its (without the apostrophe) The dog chases its tail.

I can't find definitive answers on the internet.

I guess it depends on your definition of hot and where in the country you are. In Phoenix, Arizona, it was 104f / 40c today, I was out most of the afternoon just before the hot part of the day around from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Love the pool!

As a social worker and teacher, I am mandated to report any type of abuse and can be held legally liable if I don't report it. Yes, you should report it. As in my home state of Arizona, many states have unlimited statutory limits on certain types of abuse, limits on others. It should be reported immediately. You can report it, anonymously, but get it reported, today! Stop reading this and pick-up the phone......Call today.....  I'll wait.....

Support / Re: 65 Bonus Credit from Forum

FusionCash Allows themselves 65 days to credit Forum Postings Bonus because they have to go through them all and confirm and approve them all. Don't worry I have yet have to wait the total 65 days yet. the most so far has been 44 days. once you submit yours FusionCash usually tells you when to expect your bonus after a day or so. Just be patient it is worth the wait. I got my first Forum Posting Bonus already for March and it came in 3 days early than expected. I was so surprised and so happy.

As you post more and get more approvals for the posting bonus, that will decrease. Mine now say 30 days.

Off-Topic / Re: I think my boss is bipolar.
« on: May 13, 2013, 02:55:07 am »Message ID: 736013
I realised today my boss could possibly be bipolar. One day she is so nice and the next day she is mean as can be. If she is, don't you think she should of mentioned this to  her employees, so they know what to expect. It is not easy working with someone that has this condition. I hope for her sake, she is on medication for this.

Some people who are bipolar don't realize that there's anything wrong with them.  It's like trying to see the forest through the trees.
Others might be in denial about having the mental health issue.

I understand why you would say that it's NOT easy to work with someone like that.  Maybe you can celebrate the fact that you're NOT married to that person where you'd have to deal with the unpredictable behavior on your personal time.  Hang in there!

That is so true. They also have a habit of thinking I don't need my meds and when they are on them and on doing well. They stop taking taking them and the cycle starts all over again. Great insight. Thanks for sharing!

Off-Topic / Re: What is your time zone?

Mountain Standard Time.
Arizona does not change to daylight savings time. Half of the year we are on the same time as the rest of the mountain time zone and half of the year we are on the same time as the west coast of the USA. It makes life simple for us by not changing, but the rest of the country gets really confused.

haha, no kidding we get confused.  I was flying home to the west coast the other day from Minnesota and had a stopover in Phoenix.  I checked the time of my connection then my watch and freaked!  I thought that I had missed the flight.  What I didn't account for was that Arizona had not gone to Daylight Savings so all was well.
But, DUH!!!

LOL! Last time I flew back to Phoenix, the stewardess announced the Phoenix local time and they guy sitting in the next aisle said to me, no that isn't right. I assured him that was in fact that was the correct time and explain how Arizona doesn't go into daylight savings time. He said, "Well that is just <effing> stupid! You expect me to believe that <bullshyte>?" and he storms off. As I got off the plane he is having an animated conversation with the gate people about what time it is.

A security officer stops me, as I am leaving the gate, and headed to the baggage. I also noticed two more of them, headed to the gate personnel. He asked me, "Why is that guy angry?" I said he probably hasn't had sex in a week or so, but I am just guessing. Do you know who he is? I don't have a clue. What did you talk about on the plane? Nothing. He was in the middle seats. and I was in aisle section seat. When the plane landed what did you say to him? I told him the correct time was 3:40 p.m and Arizona doesn't have daylight savings time. Why did you do that? He asked me. Why is he angry at you and calling you a liar? Like I said he probably hasn't had sex in a week or so, but I am just guessing. Sir, we take security seriously. I do too, but you are making this difficult. I hear another voice behind me laughing, that scared the bejeepers out of me and said, Roberts, we have taken enough of the gentleman's time. Yes Lieutenant. Thank-you sir, have a nice day.

I go off shaking my head, but never did hear another word about it. Sometime thing wasn't right there. I hope the guy will be okay.
