Off-Topic / Re: Whats the most recent movie you watched

Just re-watched Guardians of the Galaxy the other day. I want to know what the big easter egg is that the director says hasn't been found yet!

NOTE: I noticed most of the threads on this topic are old and locked, so if there is an open one already that I've missed I apologize.

Have any of you done any digging into your family history? If you did, did you find anything particularly interesting or shocking that you weren't expecting?

I started my search almost 5 years ago and just last year I discovered Johnny Cash is my 4th cousin twice removed; his great-grandparents are my great-great-great-great-grandparents. I've also found branches of my lineage extend back into Britain, Germany, and Scotland, but that's only on a small part of my dad's side of the family. Without record searches and DNA tests, which are out of my budget at the moment, I think I've gone about as far as I can go with my amateur searching.

The small county fair is coming up this weekend just up the road from where I live. We've never been, so my hubby and I were discussing going to see what they have. Then the big state fair starts at the end of this month, and I dunno if we're going this year. Usually we go if there's a band playing that we both like and we'll spend the day walking around and trying food samples, but there's no one this year worth going to see for either of us.

Off-Topic / Re: You get an extra $10 in change, what do you do?

Interesting that this was Walmart, too.  I would sure like to know what goes on in their training.  I am not really mad, since taking the $10 would have been the same as stealing in my mind, but I AM frustrated that instead of being thanked for being honest, I was made to feel embarrassed for holding up the line.  The easier thing to do would have been to take the $$ and say nothing, but I was not brought up that way and I would have felt guilty.  Maybe the cashier was scared she would get in trouble?  But for a manager to act like this situation was SUCH as burden was laughable.

As a former employee, I can tell you that training is minimal. It's like "Oh, you don't know how to check? Well, just wing it." I was a floor associate forced into learning how to cashier because they were "short handed", so instead of them hiring more cashiers and letting me do my job stocking my department and making it look neat and assisting customers with finding what they needed, I frequently got called up front.

Even when I later took a promotion to department manager, I still spent more time on a register than in my own department (of which I was the ONLY daytime associate). Not long after I was stepped down for "not completing my duties as a department manager" and I was given the choice of moving to the back room or, shock, going up front to be a permanent cashier.

I chose the back room out of spite (I know full well what they were doing), but once they changed the hours for that position, I had to move again to accommodate the hours I needed and ended up in the bakery as a cake decorator - in which I had to learn to bake bread and stock the floor because, once again, "short handed", in addition to filling cake orders.

This was all in the span of almost 4 years, and I finally got tired of being pulled in 5 million directions at once and getting scolded for the extra things added to my plate that 8 hours wouldn't cover in a day for a single person, not to mention being yelled at by customers for things I had absolutely no control over. All of the stress started affecting me mentally and physically and my health began to suffer, so my husband and I agreed that I needed to leave. I left less than a month before my 4th anniversary (I left this past June) and I haven't looked back.

Retail is too often such a thankless job from both sides, management and customers, so I personally thank you for being patient and honest as well as apologize for such rude behavior from management. I've been in the place of a cashier in a Walmart and sometimes things happen throughout the day that get you rattled and your mind isn't always where it should be, but it's the kind people who make things a whole lot more bearable.

Mine currently has a bunch of painting supplies on it from my last craft project. Typically it's more of an overflow area for whatever non-perishables won't fit into my cabinets. I live in an apartment, so kitchen storage isn't all that great.

I love BK's Whopper, but I also love the Frosties at Wendy's. And all I can eat from McDonald's is fries since everything else they have messes with my stomach.

Teleportation because 1. I get horrible vertigo if I go too high, and 2. I'm a huge Star Trek nerd lol

Here's another fun one my husband's family introduced me to: ranch burgers that don't contain ranch.

Sounds bizarre already, right? Here's how they're made: brown some beef, drain the grease, and add taco seasoning. Once most of the liquid has simmered down, add Cheez Whiz and mix thoroughly. There really isn't a measurement to go by, so you just have to add, mix, and taste until it tastes like ranch. Then slap it on a burger bun like you would a Sloppy Joe and eat it. I don't know how it works, I just know that it does lol

Off-Topic / Re: Cooking
« on: September 12, 2016, 10:26:19 am »Message ID: 1092432
I love to cook, but on my hubby's days off we tend to go eat out.

Hubby isn't allowed to cook without my supervision though lol He almost burned up my microwave with a microwavable rice bowl a few months back. He swore up and down the container never said to add water, so when I got home I pulled the container out of the trash and pointed to the bold blue lettering on the front that said "Just add water".

Side note: burnt microwaveable rice smells like an ashtray. It took multiple scrubbings to finally get the smell out.

Off-Topic / Re: What crockpot/slowcooker should I buy?
« on: September 12, 2016, 10:16:44 am »Message ID: 1092429
I have two slow cookers: one I bought and one we got as a wedding gift. The one I bought is a small 4qt Crock-Pot brand slow cooker that I use regularly to prepare meals for two. The one we got as a gift is a 6qt Cooks brand slow cooker that I mainly use in the winter to cook roast and chili, then portion it out and freeze it. I've had them both for almost 6 years and they both work just fine for what I need them for. Both only have the Hi - Low - Off knobs.

Yup. My car has a CD player and a cassette deck, though the cassette deck is iffy sometimes. We have an adapter, but the deck tends to spit it out more often than we actually get to use it.

Last CD we bought was the Hamilton soundtrack, and it's been playing . . . NON-STOP. (I had to go for the pun. I HAD TO lol)

I use Spotify Premium on my PS4 and my phone though.

Off-Topic / Words You Like and Dislike
« on: September 12, 2016, 08:40:59 am »Message ID: 1092414
Most people have a word they very strongly despise, the most popular tending to be "moist". So I'm curious to know what word(s) you like and dislike? Mine are:

  • Dislike: Gelatinous ( I always think of gory movies or stuff you'd see on Bones or any other CSI-type shows.)
  • Like: Slunk (I've loved this word ever since reading How the Grinch Stole Christmas as a kid.)

I'm also not a fan of the word chartreuse only because it's a very misleading color name. The first time I heard of chartreuse being a color, I immediately imagined some gorgeous jewel-tone shade of pinkish-purple.
Nope. Chartreuse is a bright tone of pea soup green.

Wow thank you!  I will look into it.  I have windows defender right now.  I didn't if I should have another antivirus for extra protection.

It never hurts to have one or two extra because one could pick up on something another missed. As long as they're set up to scan at different times, since overlapping scans are more likely to cancel one another out and potentially miss things.

My laptop's OS is Microsoft Windows 10. The free version of AVG works pretty well. I tried the paid version, but quickly asked for a refund - their firewall is INSANE and you have to go in and manually approve sites or else you can't access ANYTHING, plus the layout for paid wasn't all that user-friendly compared to the free version. I also have the paid version of Malwarebytes for an added layer of protection, though a free version exists of that as well (with the paid version I can schedule scans and the database updates automatically).

Tom's Guide usually has a pretty extensive list of programs they review that you can choose based on your operating system, or OS (e.g. Windows, Mac, etc), as well as what features you want it to have and how user-friendly you want it to be. Hope this helps!  :)

I have a 2 year old rescue dog. We were told she was rescued as a stray about 9 months ago, then adopted once and brought back after being mistreated, so she does have some quirks and anxiety issues that we're working on; we weren't told any specifics other than someone had used a shock collar on her and she got to the point of lashing out in retaliation, but we've never had any problems with her trying to bite or act out other than her being so agitated in her crate (we think this likely stems back to the aforementioned abuse) that she broke out of it a couple days ago while we were out. I think my questions would be:

  • Were you born a stray or did you have a home as a puppy?
  • What did the people before us do to you?
  • Are you happy here?
