KDE games RNG issue
« on: May 05, 2026, 01:30:27 am »
The Random Number Generator (RNG) for Klondike (KPatiemce), Kiriki and Kmahjongg stopped working for me some time ago (sometime last year). I haven't checked any other games.

In the case of Klondike, the last game number (994305140) is what appears whenever I open the game. If I choose 'New Deal', I get this numbered game again. For Kmahjongg, I always get game number 1.988,610,280. With Kiriki, I get always get a set of 5 number 3 dice.

For Klondike, I can pick some pseudo numbered game and then increment it for each new game during my time wasting gaming session. The other games are essentially useless for wasting time.

I assume they all share the same called RNG routine. I also assume I must have disabled the RNG routine (perhaps by changing the RNG method) somehow.

Could someone point me where I can possibly check (and fix) this.

Everything on my systems (including plasma) are pretty up-to-date:

I’m a bit late here, but has anyone tried checking whether the affected KDE games still rely on Qt’s old PRNG? Some Gentoo users reported improvements after rebuilding with newer Qt versions or toggling USE flags related to games or widgets. I’m curious if the RNG behavior changes when running the games under a different locale or sandbox, which could hint at a seeding issue.

You can quickly check whether KDE’s RNG is really off by comparing a few in‑game results with something external; I sometimes just roll a 12-sided dice online to sanity‑check patterns. If the game keeps skewing while an external roll looks fine, it’s usually a local entropy issue. Rebuilding the affected game with different USE flags or making sure haveged or jitterentropy is running has fixed weirdness like this for me.
