I’ve started working from different places a lot more lately — cafés, train stations, sometimes hotel lobbies. I don’t do anything too sensitive, but I still log into email, cloud storage, and a few work tools. What are the basic things I should do so my personal data isn’t floating around every time I connect outside home?

For me, the biggest change was stopping the habit of joining any open Wi-Fi just because it was available. I usually check that the network name matches the place I’m in, turn off auto-join, and avoid logging into anything important if the connection looks sketchy. A VPN also became part of my routine, especially when I’m on hotel or café Wi-Fi. I once looked into robust Toggle VPN because I wanted something that could run on both my laptop and phone without much fiddling. I’d pair that with two-factor login, updated apps, and not saving passwords in random browsers.

One small thing that helped me was making a quick “travel mode” checklist on my phone. Before connecting anywhere, I turn off sharing features, check hotspot names carefully, and make sure my devices are updated. It sounds boring, but those few habits make public connections feel a lot less risky.
