Do they really help cramps?,or  is it all in my head.

They do. The warm helps to calm and regulate the stomach, and to make the muscles that are cramping at ease.

I definitely think heating pads help cramps (relaxing muscles, etc.) and they are also comforting.  It is awful to have cramps anyway, but nice to have something warm to comfort.
