shorter life span
« on: April 29, 2010, 07:14:27 pm »
Do you realize that this is the first time in history that the younger generation has a shorter lifespan than their parents? Sad sad sad
the levels of chronic disease in children is raising - as our waist bands get larger (obesity) we get more chronic illness (heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and even some cancers!)

We need to do something to change this!!!

It all starts at home.   We as parents need to have our children do more physical activity. go to the park, running, playing, eating more fruits & veggies,& less time inf ront of the T.V. and video games. We need to teach them as they are little, the proper way to eat.

Blame it on Society itself.  It all seems to go back to $$$$$.

There is no way I want to have to have a child come into the world.  Human's are getting greedy and it's all about that $$$$.
Seems health issues are put on the back burner.

Well? A lot of people view fruits and vegetables as a luxury item because it's SO expensive.
Let's see consumers have a choice of having processed foods that last for eons or having organic items that are expensive, too small, and expire faster.
Look at the fast food chains. You can get a better value if you stick with their $1-$2 menus.
Recently, Jack in the Box posted a limited time offer of getting 3 items for $3.33. That's only $1.11 per item! WOW! Where can I find that in a grocery store these days? Hmmmm... in imaginary land.
Also, fast food chains and other processed food companies advertise heavily and I mean heavily! I rarely see an organic strawberries commercial these days.

It's like temptation all the over the place and it happens at home too. So far, I am taking control of my body by saying NO to the process  :bs: even if my mom still buys from a fast food chain or buys a huge candy bag at Sams Club. I just limit myself but not to the point where another health issue happens to me.

Yeah VyHazelE you're right. It's all in the $$$$$$$$.

The younger generation has a shorter life span because of the drugs, peer pressure and all the other conveniences the older generation didn't have or were aware of.  Obesity has always been around, its just that the younger generation are given everything and not made to work to earn their keep.  The younger generation park themselves in front of video games for hours at a time, everyday and you wonder why they are obese?  They don't get enough exercise or given chores to do.

i agree that it is very sad and i understand that a lot of it does have to do with where the money is. since i don't work, we have to get by on one income and that can make it very tempting to eat at fast food places because its cheaper to feed the four of us there than it is to go to the grocery store. but i want to raise healthy eaters so my husband and i have learned to budget and sacrifice other things to strecth the grocery budget to include the healthy stuff. i make dinner at home 6 nights a week, we have fast food once a week, and go out to a sit down restaurant once a month. all together, we spend about $400 a month on food.

as for the inactivity of our youth,  i feel that time is the culprit here. many people do not have the time to insure that their kids are getting the activity they need. this is where my not working is and advantage to our family. my 23 month old does not need incentive to be active, she runs 300 laps around the lving every single day in her regular play time . :)  and my 9 year old is allowed video game time, but only as much as the time he spend reading and playing outside. so if he reads for 30 minutes and then runs around the backyard with his sister for an hour, then he gets an hour and a half of video game time. we take the kids to the park every other day to ride their bikes and when the weather is nice we go hiking or to the beach where the kids spend a lot of energy chasing their dad into the water and playing in the sand.
