They say mean things because they are bitter about their own failures in life. Much is jealousy. May be the person is young,or thin, or wealthy, or has love. Whatever it is, they feel lacking these things. And because of that, they lash out. What they need is someone to love and understand them. They will resist but it can be done

It's just a reflection of their own misery.
I just smile and move on

Maybe they cannot express their feelings of anger or frustration in a normal way? I had a boss once. She was awful. Always extremely mean and just lashing out at everyone. Later I discovered she suffered from multiple sclerose and I felt very sorry for her that she could not talk about it but only scared everyone away because she was not feeling okay.
Sometimes you do not know why people are acting the way they do. It can be fear, anger or other frustrations. I try to ask what is wrong or explain to them what their behaviour makes me feel like. They mostly realise they should act a different way, because the way they act also is negative to themselves.
