I think we should all learn Spanish, Latin America is most of our hemisphere. There has to be at least a Billion people south of us who also want to do business with us Americans. Hispanics are a growing segment of the American population, and we should embrace this. Hasta La Vista!  8)

How about...here's a crazy thought...English? I'm all for new cultures emigrating to America and keeping close ties with their culture and language, but I would not move to a foreign country and expect everyone there to learn my language just so I wouldn't have to bother learning theirs. That's just silly IMHO

I think that's a very insular view to take though. Some people may be only just starting to learn the language, and it's nice to be able to interact with them. Plus, learning a new language helps you eavesdrop on the bus ... haha. ;) Just kidding.

I don't think Latino/a immigrants "expect" everyone to learn their language, but that doesn't mean it's not helpful to know it anyway and that it's a bad idea to have some knowledge of the language and culture as well.

There are even studies that have been done that suggest that learning other languages can help slow the onset of Alzheimer's, dementia, etc. Even George (W) Bush speaks Spanish. I don't think it's a bad idea to be able to know it since Hispanic people make up 16% of the population of the country (that's almost 50 million people!) - of course many of them are bilingual, but that's a lot of people you're shutting out if you don't make the effort.

That's my thoughts. I'm too lazy to take the quiz, though, haha. :) I'm making an effort to study and learn Spanish anyway so that I can help  more customers at work and have more chances for better employment (being bilingual is a huge help on the resume these days too!).

I think probably Chinese would be a good idea to learn as well as Spanish.

I do agree. I think it is pretty ridiculous that you cannot find a job in out here in california unless you speak fluent spanish. Are we in America or Mexico?

With that being said my kids are learning the language and so am I so that we are able to get jobs and know when people are talking about us.lol. Just kidding but this is the world we live in now, we can choose to gripe about it or raise our skill levels to be competitive in the job market. JMHO.

I heard from a friend Rosetta Stone is a really good one but it is pricey something like $500 for the software or you could contact your local community college they usually have classes you can take and many of them offer classes online. Hope that helps in giving you a starting point. :)

Having traveled all over the world during my career in the military, I never expected to have all of the nationals of the country where I was assigned, to speak English. I did my best to learn from them the national language and many times they wanted me to teach them English. It was very nice to be accepted when ever you tried (though sometimes failed) to converse in the native language. I have to agree with many that have replied to this question that people who come to America should not require us to speak to them in their language. Being from the northern tier states, on the trips I made into Canada, many of the French Canadians would not talk to us in English until we tried to speak their language. On my last trip into Quebec Province one of the shop keepers was giving the cold shoulder to one of the ladies with me because she was determined to have him speak English, I took her aside and told her the phrase she need to say and he then spoke to her in PERFECT English, she was shocked that it was that easy.
