The Last Acceptable Racism

Not quite on topic, but I wanted to leave a message for Walks.

I asked my mother tonight about if there was Indian blood in our lineage.  Apparently my mother's father's mother was Apache and her married name was Cope.  On my mother's mother's side, I'm not sure how far back it goes, but there is Cherokee blood.  I'll need to do some more digging, but at least I've gotten that much, right?

Everyone, should recognize and celebrate the diversity in our various populations and everyone has the right to be proud of who they are in regards to race, sex, orientation or what have you.

The issue that I have with some always throwing out the "we are all one...." comment is the very real historical and present fact that attempts of forced assimilation has and is being directed toward my Peoples, as well as many other demographics, with verying degress of success. even to the point that many millions have had their lives taken, simply for wanting to excercise their right to be themselves and honor their Ancestors. So Im sure we can all appreciate the sensitivity there.

As for the origin for the term "redskin", thank you for sharing that.  I honestly had no idea.  Just something else that gets eliminated from our education I guess.  Knowing that, I would be just as offended at the team name, and I plan on sharing the education with as many people as possible.  Do you know of any petitions or other organized movements, online or off, to get the name changed?  I plan on looking into this, and if I find anything I will post it here for anyone interested.

Amy, I don't know of any petitions that are being submitted right now , however, I have have signed several in the last year or so. I know many activist and most work on this issue as well as many others. Brenda Golden who hosts the blogtalk radio show I have linked to a few times, works on the issue. She also writes a newspaper column I have linked on here. Both have archives where I am sure you can find articles/shows addressing the issue. If you need help locating any of these I will be glad to help as I can.

Another so called "reality show", another affront to Indigenous Peoples.

 

This time, the culprit is "WIPEOUT".

In an episode which aired on ABC Television, on Thursday, February 17th, 2011 the two hosts engaged in a little banter over "tribes of savages", and "blankets ridden with smallpox".

We wonder how far they would get with jokes about long train rides to gas chambers disguised as showers, or how about some quips about a walk in the woods to a good ole' lynching. It is apparent, that Indigenous Peoples truly are the last acceptable targets for such overt racism.

 

Please consider contacting the producers of the show, and requesting that they issue an apology. Ask that they hold all accountable, from the writers, to the hosts who uttered these tasteless words.
