I guess some people gave up.  When people win several times in a row it can be discouraging to those who don't.

When people give up it makes it easier for those still in to win.  But it also takes longer to reach 1000,

My son registered as a conscientious objector.  We don't do military stuff.  My husband was in the airforce during the Korean War.  That was enough.
