What vacuum do you use for long hair?

Just what vacuum do you use to vacuum long hair?  My hair length goes from shoulder length to about mid-back.  Every time I vacuum my hair gets caught in that rotary wheel in the vacuum head and am so tired of having to sit down with a pair of scissors and literally cut my hair from the wheel.  In doing so I also end up jamming the wheel and have to constantly take it to get fixed.  A friend recommended a pet hair vacuum but that my hair will still get caught in the wheel.  Do I just use a steam vacuum where the bottom is open?
