Pet Owners - Have Your Cats and Dogs Spayed and Neutered - Please

"End the suffering!  Get your cats - and all strays and ferals - spayed and neutered!"  TimeTraveler, I ran across one of your posts today with this signature and thought I would use it to start a new thread.  (Sorry)  I'm sure it has been discussed on the forum, but this is a subject I am passionate about.  I am an animal lover, and it breaks my heart to see how some animals are abused.  I cannot watch the commercials on television about helping those animals without crying.  If you have received a pet for Christmas, please have them spayed or neutered (unless you are a breeder).  They are so much happier and less likely to wander and get hurt.  If you have given your child a pet for Christmas, please teach them the proper ways to care for them.  Please also consider rescue dogs and cats when you are looking for a pet.  There are so many of them looking for loving homes.  We have had both dogs and cats (I love them both), and they have all been rescued from shelters or from people who didn't want them.   Some of the most sweet and loving animals are mutts!

Well said. I believe that if you are not a responsible pet owner then you should not own a pet. It is not fair to the creature you are responsible for.

loulizlee I totally agree with you. Too many animals are being mistreated. It is so sad to see alot of the things that people do to animals without realizing that they also suffer.

loulizlee  - I totally agree. I have 3 dogs and 3 cats- all spayed or neutered. The 3 cats and 1 dog were rescues. There are so many unwanted animals in shelters that are wonderful pets- just had the misfortune of ending up in the wrong home. I wish more people would check out shelters when looking for a pet. Also- almost every breed of dog has a rescue group looking to find home for pure-bred dogs.

Yes, my sister-in-law has two beautiful Pomeranians that she got from a Pom rescue organization.  Depending on which organization, you may have to pay a fee, but it is not nearly as much as you would pay to a breeder.

I agree.  All my cats are rescues.  I once "cleaned up" the neighborhood by adopting a couple of the local queen's kittens, giving one to a friend and sending the queen to the country with another friend who helps with adoptions from the pound.  Unfortunately my work was gradually undone by others in the neighborhood who allowed their unfixed cats to roam outside.  I just moved from there, but as of when I was there there were at least four breeding queens repopulating the neighborhood.  Last kitten season we had at least four litters and too many little calicos to name.  (I name the local strays for reference sake.)  Now I have four of the most loyal, loving kitties you'd ever want.

....working on getting the newest edition to our family neutered, he is getting agressive to our other cats, as in mating everything he sees! LOL!! I can't wait until we can afford it. My nerves will be much calmer!

I always get my pets spayed/neutered. It is best for them and you. Plus we dont need anymore "unwanted" pets in the shelters than are already there. Next time you want a pet, please consider a shelter pet. They need love and a home too!

There are many organizations that offer discounted spay/neuter services--PAWS is one that comes to mind. Some vets may offer a discount for a rescued pet. As for clean up of ferals, PAWS here does that as well. I agree that being a responsible pet owner always includes spay/neuter and health care for the pet.

always a wonderful message.  Spayed or Neutered is always necessary, but certainly if a pet owner is not able to manage where and when his or her pets are, then it's the responsible thing to do.

I was so encouraged reading the comments made by everyone here.  I wish the message would get across to everyone who has pets.
