I think ice will take away the pain

I think it depends on what causes the pain.  Best thing to do would be to talk to a doctor.  If it's joint pain I think heat is better than ice, but I don't know for sure.

I'll third the doctor.  My doc gave me a whole bunch of physio exercises to do that really help.  I never had much luck with hot or cold compresses.

depend on the kind of pain it is, try applying ice to swelling to make it go down, but also ice is to make pain numb to numb it out.

Like others have said - it depends on what's causing the pain.  If it's inflammation, something swelling - then ice should help ease the pain.

If it's muscular - like knotted muscles - perhaps heat will help relax the muscles.

I know I get knee pain due to tight leg muscles (I'm very active) - to relieve the knee pain, I massage and stretch my quads (thighs), calfs, ankles and bottom of my feet.  I was amazed at how that helped.  After talking with my trainer, he said when my quads and calves get too tight, they pull on my knee joint, which results in extra strain/pain.  Made sense.

If this is a long term thing - you may want to see a doctor or chiropractor.  A while back when I was a competitive ballroom dancer, my knees got really painful, and my chiropractor took and x-ray and found my kneecaps had shifted inwards 7mm (which is huge for a knee).  My over use of my inner leg muscles caused them to pull the caps out of alignment.  I had to do a lot of exercising of the outer muscles to balance out and pull the caps back neutral.

Just some things from my experience to get you investigating.  Hope you figure it out!
