I am very serious when I say the library is the best kept secret.  It has all the new release movies, just like Redbox.  In my state, you can even go online and reserve them, then they call you when it comes in.  I can checkout 12 (yeah, twelve!!!) movies at a time FOR FREE!  I can keep them for an entire week.  Who cares if you don't like it or don't watch them all... they are free!  I get books and music CDs, too, but the movies have me hooked.  Sometimes, we go back several times a week to trade out (I have a 3 year old who loves to pick movies!).  Everyone I tell ends up getting hooked on it!  Hope you enjoy it!

I was all set to agree with mperez about the library until you mentioned the kids.  (Even in my small town we get movie night at the library and can borrow movies.)  Try googling crafts for kids.  Many use common household items and could keep them occupied for hours.

In my younger years, I always enjoyed reading... then I had kids and had no time.
Lately I find myself always buried in a book. I love reading and it is great being able to share good books with friends.
Yep, it's easy enough too!

I love to go down to the docks and just walk among the boats or see the fishermen come in with their catch. I also love to watch aircraft take off and land at the airport. My grandchildren love both. :)

The amount of free activities may largely depend on where you live.  In my area, we have things like Montford Park Players who perform takes on Shakespeare plays every weekend at an outside theater, admission is free or whatever you want to donate.  There are concerts and other activities every Friday night in a park downtown.  Library for movies and books, but they also have book clubs, story hours for kids.  We have alot of trails in this area for hiking and bike riding.  Ball parks if you can get some people together to play.  There are waterfalls and lots of picnic areas.  While gas is expensive, I am fortunate enough to live an area where most of these things are available within a 10 mile radius.  We also had game night every Friday when our children were home.  Lots of board games with a special inexpensive homemade treat that the kids often helped to prepare. We go fishing at local ponds/lakes.  Internet has tons of ideas for crafts, gardening and other projects.  We have a free newspaper that comes out each week available at most convenience stores that outlines all the things to do in the area, both paid and free.  Check with your local better business bureau, colleges, parks & rec dept, privately owned business (especially those that are in the arts, such as pottery) - many offer free or very low cost classes.

My kids and I walk down to the pond and feed the ducks. Only thing that coast is a loaf of day old bread.

I have been bringing my son since he was a baby... he's only 3 now.  Mine has a children's section where they can play and don't have to be quiet- they even have a stage for them to perform on, a magnet board, a little kitchen, etc.  They also have music classes and story time.  On Saturday morning, they do free craft day.  It is worth looking into!  It is also a good learning opportunity to teach appropriate behavior in different settings- like being quiet while walking through the library to get to the children's section.
