I use the mechanical pencils when I want to do really fine drawings and the good old fashioned wooden pencils for shading and sketching - ranging from 4H to 6B. I even use the builders marking pencil with the square point as it is blacker than black!

I have always preferred a pencil to pens unless the pen is erasable. And even then I will usually use a pencil. Good old no. 2 is fine for me, though I don't discriminate against the mechanicals. I just don't like having to purchase refills which is why I stick with regular wooden pencils. I usually prefer soft pencils if I can get them.

???  According to my dictionary lead pencils are "pencils of graphite enclosed in wood".  Mechanical pencils are mechanical pencils, not lead pencils.

I never cared much for mechanical pencils.  As an artist I much prefer the feel, function and even smell of lead pencils.

During my primary school days, we used to call them lead pencils. I also like the good old fashion soft No. 2 pencil (HB) for marking the bubbles on tests and sketching/shading drawings too. The only inconvenience for a regular pencil is the tip eventually becomes dull so it has to be sharpened very often. I just discovered today pencils and mechanical pencils are referred as lead pencils.  :)

I have been using mechanical pencils for a very long time now. Once they were introduced into my life, I couldn't pick up another wooden pencil unless I was using a #2 one for testing. Mechanical pencils are much more convenient in my opinion because they last longer and you don't have to sharpen them all the time.
