there are so many variations these days that it is impossible to find the right match unless you know exactly what you're doing

Install the game, then right click on the icon on your desktop for the game.  Select Properties, then select compatibility.  Choose which operating system, then click apply.  Play your game.

Not really, the major OS system I started really using the computer was late windows xp and/or early vista... Windows 7 is probably the best OS and Windows 8 being one of the worst... There are some videogames I was to play again but most of them are Nintendo 64 and PS, which I think I still have

This is why I'm hesitant about upgrades myself. I always tend to lose things I find very important. In the past I've compensated by running a dual operating system on my computer, but nowadays I end up giving up most of my prior content in place of a semi decent replacement. An upgrade doesn't always mean an "upgrade."

i REALLY need a new laptop but seems all you can find around here has windows 8.  i've tried it on the systems in the stores and a friends computer and hatedddd it!!!!
You could replace the Windows 8 operating system, by buying a Windows 7 or Windows XP disc, and installing it. I want a new laptop too and this is what I may do.
