Task SCAM - Beware : Watch Video, Get Your Code (easy)
« on: April 14, 2013, 09:51:38 am »
There is a Task titled: Watch Video, Get Your Code (easy) worth 100 cents. It says to watch a video and get a code for verification for credit. I'm pretty sure it's not a real task. It looks like a big scam.

1) The link takes you to a free create-a-site host (Yolasite) in which anyone can create a free site so it's not even official.

2) The "watch video" button WILL pop up saying it doesn't detect VLC player on your computer and that you must download it in order to watch the video and you will get your code. (I have had VLC player on my computer for years and I use it frequently, so that is just a lie to prompt the person to download the file).

3) I humored them and clicked the link to download VLC player and it started a download that was loaded with a bunch of bundled adware and it was NOT the official VLC player download with which I am familiar. It DID have VLC player in it, too, and after all was installed correctly I still could not watch the video or get a code to complete the task for my 100 cents.

This looks like just a fake promise so the person who made the spage can get downloads of this file and there is more than likely no compensation going to be made. They must have hired CrowdFlower Tasks to help.

If anyone has successfully completed this, please post the approval, otherwise I wouldn't waste my time or risk anyone elses computers.

I got that too.  It has taken me forever to get rid of everything.  I have things that still pop up, I get toolbars I never thought I had.  In the future if they tell me to download something, I will check out the certification or go to the official site and download what they say I need from there and then come back and try again and if they still want me to download-forget it.

Although I would never download and install any software that isn't already on my computer, I think you should report that Task to CrowdFlower.  It's obviously scamming a lot of people in to downloading a piece of software that a) doesn't work, and; b) is also installing OTHER more "sketchy" things on your computer (viruses, trojans, backdoors?).  If CrowdFlower were made aware of these tasks by enough people, you may just succeed in getting rid of the task off the list.

This sounds like a task I tried Friday, except then they were only offering 50 cents. After I downloaded the player (and all that went with it),I went back to watch the video and still got the message that the player was not detected.I went back to the Tasks page to startagain to see if that would help, and got the "no more work" message from CrowdFlower. After all that I didn't even get to watch the video. It What I got was a toolbar,an updater program and a site called Sweet packs.com that took over my homepage. It took some time but I think I got rid of all the unwanted downloads.I'll know better next time.

These obvious scams have been reported to CrowdFlower many, many, many times.  The company’s response is that all this garbage was created by someone else (not employees) using the DIY/self-service tool, which allows CrowdFlower customers to create and distribute their own surveys / tasks on the platform, and that CrowdFlower is making every effort to prevent these kinds of tasks from appearing on our task walls.  Clearly CF still has a lot of progress to make on this issue.

As other members have mentioned, by all means, please keep reporting the offending job IDs (located in the help menu) to CrowdFlower’s support forum so that they can take down the tasks and ban whoever made them in the first place.

This scam has been around forever. It shows up every now and then to try and catch newbies.

I thought everyone knew about this already. I mentioned ages ago, along with several other FC members, that the 'download software & get a code' tasks are the main ones people should stay far away from. You'll never find a code, no matter how hard you try. As for the 'software' they ask you to download, it's always fishy and I don't want to risk harming my new laptop. I completely ignore these tasks and I know most other task workers do as well. It's easy to spot these 'download software & get a code' tasks because they are the only ones that promise 50 cents, 100 cents, and 250 cents.  :)

I downloaded this too. I thought I knew better. So I just uninstalled it. Pop-ups have been crazy! Thanks for advice. :)

I generally prefer downloading software from their official respective sites, which is what I did in this case with VLC. This task did seem very suspicious to me, though...especially when it claimed to not detect VLC even though I had just installed it.

It didn't harm my computer because I have a good anti-virus... however, I wasn't aware that these type of scam tasks DO appear on CrowdFlower. This was my first experience with it on CF. And I know it's not CF's fault, but they should really review the type of tasks some of their customers can post. It's not fair for us hardworking, honest people and it can give them a bad rep.

I typically stay away from ALL offers that tell me to download something! You never know what kind of junk files/viruses will be coming with those type of mass-audience links...

Plus, I just don't like the idea of something i'm not even interested in changing the permissions on my computer and whatnot. DOWNLOAD AT YOUR OWN RISK@!!

That's the smart thing to do! Viruses and spyware are turning up everywhere nowadays. Unless I know exactly what I'm downloading, I don't even attempt it.

This is the thing that concerns me about sites like this.  I have never downloaded anything from any of these sites yet have had several trojans in the last week.  Not sure if they are coming from the videos here at fusion cash or on other sites; I also do paid emails and videos on other sites.  Last week my email was hacked into and everyone in my address book got emails that were not from me.  I run malware and virus protection every day but am beginning to wonder if the time involved to earn $25 and the risk of malware or viruses is worth it.
