Age discrimination

Do you think employers base their hiring you on your age?

That's against the law, but any dummy employer can come up with an excuse if they don't want you. Get over it and move on, who wants to work where they are not wanted anyway?

I think it is true but for both young and older folks looking for work. When I was 21 or so I had gotten good grades in school and had taken several classes and gained a lot of experience with office software programs in school. I left school because of the financial burden and had only worked one job as a student. I went to a temp agency to try and find a job to make ends meet and give me more experience. They turned me away after I told them I hadn't worked in an office before  and said they had no work for me. Another lady came in right after me and she was allowed to test her ability on certain office programs to see if she would qualify for work. I asked if I could take a test on those programs as well to prove that I had experience with the programs but she told me I could not and sent me away again. I feel like a lot of this was because of my job history and age rather than my ability. I see workers all the time in positions using computers that don't know very simple functions on a computer and get confused if anything changes on the computer.

The Just for Men "touch of gray" hair comb in stuff comes to mind :P  But yeah, I'd imagine a lot of them do.

I hear what you are saying, but still when its happens to you its still frustrating.

It is against the law! But companies still do it because they hire whomever they want to hire.

Well yeah some do but they tell you beforehand. For most jobs you have to be at least 18. It was nearly impossible for me to get a job in high school in the city. On the other hand some places don't like to hire older people.

I'm sure they do.  They also consider whether you have kids or not. They just won't ever say that's why they made their decision.

Very much so.  I believe age discrimination goes on all the time.

I am nearing 55, so I know that age discrimination occurs.  I am looking forward to re-joining the workforce, so I will be watching out for that one.

Yes I think they do discriminate, but they would probably get more work out of older people.

Yes, some employers do discrimintate. I worked for one company and they were hiring. I was in my office (they didn't know it) they were next door to me and one guy said, 'we need to find a pretty female for this position.'

Another job was a receptionist position. The company want to hire an older lady. Sadly, a degree doesn't matter that much anymore.

I think they do.  I am currently in the job market and I avoid volunteering any information that would disclose my age.  It used to be that you got penalized for being too young and inexperienced.  Now you get penalized for being older and paying your dues.
