Worst Bosses in the World
« on: August 06, 2013, 08:56:29 am »
I have this independent contractor position that I have been working for almost two months.  This is for a very large reputable company although the division is rather small.  I was  told that the first month I worked it would seem like a lot of work for the money but if I did the work, after that first month I would get more work given to me and it would get easier.  It is a very long story, but so far here is how it has come down.

I am still waiting on my first paycheck of $66 for about three weeks worth of 14 hour days seven days a week.  During the 2nd month of those types of hours, the company I work for lost a contract, so about two weeks of that work were taken away and I was not paid for it because my contract says the client has to accept the work.  Bear in mind it had nothing to do with my work, simply a disagreement the client had with the upper management of my company.

Later in the month, I was given the work back, but I had to start completely over and now was given half the amount of time to complete it.  I met all of my goals and was so proud and looked forward to getting the additional work I was promised.

Now in August, I have just been told that again, the client does not like they way our company did the work (again, not having to do with my part of the work) and therefore, I probably won't be paid for all I did.

If this is not all bad enough, our boss will not even tell us where we stand.  When we will know if we are getting paid.  She is acting as though we are being petty and out of line for being upset.

What is wrong with people like her?  Legally, there is nothing me and my other independent contractors can do, because we are IC's, but honestly, being an IC should not be license to treat people like garbage.

How do I get hooked up with stupid people like this?  This div. is part of one of the largest research marketing firms in the world, so honestly, all the research in the world would not have allowed me to see this coming.  Just lucky, I guess.

I worked for a woman who owned a mailbox service.  She had this bad habit of coming in and going off at the drop of a hat.  Her husband lived in Woodlawn, Tennessee and she lived in Chicago.  She thought she had the right to go off on me, and caught me one day when I was in a bad mood.  I sat there listening to her for an hour.  She finally shut up, and I asked her if she was finished, because it was my turn.  When I went off, I guess she thought I was grouchy and bought me Popeye's Chicken to eat.  That was besides the point; she went off because I typed a paper on a typewriter that did not do it in print, but in script.  I couldn't help it because that was what she had.  Her brother was there one day and she went off; he told her to leave me alone.  The only time she was in a good mood was when her husband (she called him "Mr. Sweetmeat") and she got some for a few months.  I told her she needed to get a life already because not everyone is going to sit around and let her talk to them like they are little children.  She would laugh at this man who would come in to check his mail, and called herself accusing me of the man; she told me I wanted her leftovers.  I snapped and told her that I don't need her leftovers; I can pull a man any day I want to.  She had many quirks.  When she called herself docking me when she hadn't paid me, when I went off again, she discovered that I was really pissed at her.  I was also pregnant.  She actually fixed her mouth to tell me she thought I was doing her a favor; I asked her what kind of favor, because she wasn't giving me enough to take her constant and belligerent abuse.  I went on vacation, and she chose to hire someone else. :BangHead: :BangHead: :BangHead:

This seems to happening more often.! My Son got caught up in two different Jobs that were somewhat similar to your instance.

He went to work for a company that would pay him on a "as pay basis" which means that, if they didn't get paid, he would not get paid. He was working for them for 17 days before he got paid for any of the jobs he did and that was only about 25 hours of work. He started a complaint into the Unemployment office since the job was on their computer system. They told him that if he accepted the job - he accepted that type of pay system. He had to report his earnings to the Unemployment office to maintain his benefits and he reported 0 pay in the first 3 weeks, which was actually true because he did not receive any pay for 17 days and then that first paycheck was only about $250. After the complaint to unemployment, he got a letter stating that they overpaid him for 3 weeks when he was employed, but not receiving a check. He just truthfully stated he received no pay the first 3 weeks, they said he should have estimated what he would have got paid. He left the job after about 13 weeks and still had not received his full hours, and really he could not fully check because he did not keep his own records for the jobs and the company would not give him copies. He left in August 12 and he was still receiving 3 months after he left money for the jobs that came in after he left. After all this the unemployment put him on 1 year suspension of any benefits because they stated that he lied or accused him of fraud.

Since then he has had 3 jobs and they were all temporary, none of them lasting more that 6 weeks at a time.! It seems they just hire enough to get caught up because everything in Va is pretty much Ind Contract, even for the state and Fed govt. and I know that the Fed Govt has strict guidelines, if you don't complete in the time stated, the contractor is going to get daily fines for every day they fall behind. I believe the state has pretty much the same guidelines. I thought we were worried about the Middle class, It seems things are getting much worse for the working class to find a job, maintain a job, or even keep a job. My Son is a Electrician and he is finding this throughout the Construction field. And by the way the last 3 Jobs he held were not even in the Electrical field, they were in Maintenance and installing siding.

That was actually 24 days before he received any pay from the "Pay as Paid basis"

I was kind of worried about that too when I applied for unemployment, because I was actually working, but I was not getting paid and I didn't even know for sure how much it was going to be if I did get paid.  So I wondered how they would treat that, but I guess I don't have to worry about it since I was denied unemployment anyway.

What is really disgusting is that I could have stayed at my job of six years, but I knew is was ending soon.  I felt like rather than be unemployed, I should find something else before it happened.  I didn't have anyway to know that things there would go wrong and I would be out of a job and then not be able to get unemployment.  I guess that would be because I have never drawn it before ever in my life.

Seems to me that they should look at the total situation and not just the last few weeks of your employment history.  I mean I have worked constantly for 35 years, yet I need unemployment one time just for a short period of time and I don't qualify.  Something is wrong with that picture.

Yes, I agree, kerseycarol, but sometimes working for someone is better than working for no one.  Of course in my case it seems to be about the same, since I still am not getting paid.  Out of desperation a lot of people become something then never intended to be.  I understand that a little better now, but honestly I don't think I could mistreat people like that and sleep at night.

You worked 3 weeks, 14 hours a day, 7 days a week and agreed to be paid $66?  Surely I am missing something.

No you are not.  The contract requires you to accept a contract for the month.  After you complete that one and they see that you can do the job, they agree to give you more clients.  If you can handle that, they give you more.  The problem is that the first client they gave me got angry at the company two weeks after I started working on the contract.  So I was told I was not going to get paid at all because my contract says that the client has to accept the work for me to get paid.  Bear in mind that my work just involves part of the process.  I don't have ultimate control of the quality.  I am simply scheduling others to do the work and following up to make sure it is done.  After a week of thinking I was not getting paid, I was told that the client would give us the work back but we did not get an extension on our deadline.  I could have quit at that point and probably should have.  But the carrot of getting more work and the fact that I have no other income right now made me continue to try to fulfill the contract.  I finished on time, but now once again, the client is unhappy with the end result so they are threatening again not to accept the work.

Unfortunately as an independent contractor, there is not much I can do, which is why so many companies like to hire people as ICs.  I just got hired by a competitor of this company so I am getting ready to see if this entire business works this way.  The new company told me they will give me as much work as I can handle, so there is no carrot dangling in front of me in order for me to earn money.

I thought my new job would be different since I am now working for a Christian man instead of Satan's demonic brother.  But I have learned in the short time I have been here, the greed for more money is definitely the root of all evil.  At least this boss isn't sleeping with every thing in a skirt that he sees in front of and behind his wife's back as the other boss was notorious for doing.  At least I do get my weekly pay check on time.  That is a blessing!
Have a wonderful day!

I lost a great job because I complained about a crew leader that sat on a forklift texting, in the way of all production and it caused the shift to lose their production bonus

My husband's old boss was transferred somewhere and have new bitchy woman boss now. He said she doesnt clue of what she's doing and very demanding. Lately my husband is very stressful everyday since the new boss came. One day he was about to quit. I am just hoping that he will have more patience and he can handle all the stress about his job.

I just remembered this other boss I had once.  We were always so busy in my department that we never had time to go to lunch, so we would order food and eat at our desks.  My boss would come around to sign paperwork.  If I had a salad I would usually put certain pieces to the side that I didn't eat, like olives and tomatoes.  He would reach down and grab the pieces I put to the side and eat them off of my take out tray while he was signing the paperwork I had.  He was really creepy.
