swollen feet/ankles/calves
« on: October 01, 2013, 08:05:40 pm »
my left foot/ankle/calf is swollen off and on and i already went to the dr for it and she did some blood tests and they said everything was normal and the dr suggests losing weight. since she has told me that i have lost weight but it is still happening. i dont know if it due to having diabetes because i had gestational diabetes when i was pregnant. it feels really weird and i know each time it is swollen. i changed shoes and by changing my shoes my feet dont hurt as much but the one is still swollen. the dr gave me water pills but they didnt help very much. idk what's going on and i think i should call the dr again. i should get a genetics test to see if any diseases are in my genes. i might be a carrier of something.. u never know.

I am having the same problem. My left foot/ankle swells to the point that it's painful and hard to walk sometimes.

The doctor said it's "because you smoke."

The doctor before her said it's "because you're overweight."  :-\

I don't think they know or care. I do know that avoiding salt, eating less processed foods, and sleeping with my feet elevated above my heart helps.

It sounds like inflammation and sometimes I experience that in my knees.  I walk a lot because I don't own a car so it's absolutely crucial that I be able to help myself.  Bromelain is an enzyme found in pineapple that can help digest protein and reduce inflammation.  Turmeric is a spice that can be used for a lot of different health issues including inflammation.  Both can be bought in tablet/capsule form and I buy my turmeric capsules at Walmart.

Be well and be happy!
Have a great day!

Sounds like you need to get a second opinion from another medical professional.

So far, I have never had that problem but have friends that do, that's why I always wear compression stockings when I am flying on an extended flight to try and avoid.

Yes I also had gestational diabetes.  I understand that if you've had gestational diabetes you have a 70 or 80% chance of getting type 2 diabetes within 10 years.  My older son is now 9 and I still haven't got it but probably will (my father had type 2).  Swollen ankles, calves though is not matching up I don't think. I agree it sounds similar to long-flight syndrome.  I got this once when I was on a long (5 hour +) boat ride in Thailand. The swelling didn't go down for days. So I make a special effect to get up and walk around every hour when I'm on an international flight. Those special stocking are a great idea, but so is occasionally stretching your legs, circling your feet etc.  Hope this helps.

Watch your diet very carefully: Reduce or eliminate salt and sugar from your diet. Drink lots of water. Wear comfortable shoes- use your size in wide (W), if needed. And finally, elevate your legs any time you have a chance.

I get swollen feet and ankles sometimes.  Usually it's from too much desk time and not enough sleep.  You might also try lowering your salt intake.  Remember that processed foods contain extra salt.  Putting your feet up when they're swollen will help them drain.  You can also go to a store that sells natural remedies and ask for the homeopathic medicine Natrum Sulphuricum.  I took that when I worked in a lab and was sitting for long hours.  The best thing is to make sure you get eight hours sleep so your body can heal, like it's supposed to.
