reading books
« on: May 19, 2014, 06:55:51 am »
I am learning new words and expanding my vocabulary in the book I am reading now [novel about a sugar cane farm].
I recently read a book about a cowboy leading a herd of cattle. There was some vocabulary in there that was new to me.
I'll never forget my fifth grade teacher who gave us five new vocabulary words every day.

Reading is a very good way to expand your vocabulary, that's the way children learn in school.

I love to read.  When I was young my father insisted we read everyday.  He didn't care what we read, a novel, comic books, anything, but we had to read.  He got us to enjoy reading and when my kids were young I did the same with them.  They both love to read now.  We mostly read on the Nook or Kindle.

I like to read, but lately I haven't done much of it. I have so many other things to do, and end up spending most of my spare time on the computer.

I love to read!  I try to read some everyday as I find it is good and quiet down-time.  My husband reads more than I do and he makes little notes as he reads, then he'll look up words he's not familiar with.  That's a good habit with him.

I remember in school when our teacher would have us write down any words that we didn't know the meaning of while we were reading, and only look up the words at a natural break in the story (eg at the end of a chapter) so as not to disrupt the flow of the reading esp. if you could guess at the definition by its context. Although now with the reader on my phone, I can actually highlight the word and it will pop-up its definition.

My geometry teacher actually told us to keep a dictionary with us. If we didn't know the words then just look them up and learn something. When I'm reading at home I have one I used to use in high school. If not then I'll look them up on my phone.

Reading has been my favorite past time ever since I learned to read at age 4. I have found that reading books has not only enhanced my vocabulary but also my spelling. It's so good to see on this forum that there are other avid readers as well.  :)

I love reading, but my area of interest has been changing over the years.

I love to read, although I don't read for new vocabulary. I like suspense and mystery books the most.
