I really really really really hate that. It is lazy to do that and hard to read.

I use a lot of abbreviations when I am taking notes for myself.  But those notes are for me.  I don't use them like you are talking about and I don't know anyone who is getting out of control with it.

I don't have a problem with the typical abbreviations (LOL, ROFL, LMBO, SMH, etc.).  I get aggravated when one texts me & makes up her own abbreviations.  I waste time "googling" it only to find NOTHING so then I have to waste more time texting to ask her what the abbreviation meant.........only to find she misspelled a letter in her "made up abbreviation".  She'll text back how the abbreviation was "supposed to be spelled" instead of what she meant.  :(

Then for several months, I had wondered why another  thought EVERYTHING was HAWT.  I assumed they just thought it was a cool word to use but didn't know what it meant.  I mentioned it to someone else who said "oh, that means Having A Wonderful Time".  That was a little strange ...for someone to always be texting "HAWT" in every text... Finally I asked them WHAT was up with "HAWT" all the time???  (They were stunned that I didn't know that was the abbreviation for "how awesome was that?")

I don't like confusion or miscommunications.  :(

Texting abbreviations is just another example of the dumbing down of America. No one knows how to spell anything anymore. It's sad that we don't care enough to use real words.

It's even sadder that people don't talk face to face and see each other's expressions. I constantly see people walking side by side and both of them looking at their phones. Really?  ???

I think a lot of people, especially the younger generation, have gotten lazy and don't want to write words out.  Plus, they don't know how to spell.  I'm a writer, and I deal with words.  Words are my friends.  :)    P.S.  The last two times my husband and I ate out, I noticed pre-teens and teens sitting at tables with their families and never put their phones or iPads down the whole time.

I hate all the abbreviations too. Half the time I don't know what the other person is saying. I guess I'm old school and just type things out!!

Yes I am not into texting and have a hard time reading some of the younger people's messages. The language is changing too much.

Yeah, I still can't remember what "smh" means no matter how many times I think I'll remember it, LOL.  For the most part, I do know a lot of the internet jargon.  I guess stenography helped a lot with that.  I always have fun trying to decipher custom license plates!  Now, let me ask you this?  C4n y0u r34d th15?  1t'5 4n0th3r typ3 0f 1nt3rn3t j4rg0n.  1f y0u c4n, y0u'r3 "3l1t3!"  ROTFLMFAO!

I took shorthand many, many years ago, and I was told it ruins your spelling.  I don't think it had any effect on mine.  Barring some physical or mental problem, you can choose to be literate.  My belief is that you're never too old to learn.  And if people would just take the time to proofread what they write, it would help considerably.  I think that's just a courtesy to the reader.  Mistakes will always happen, but I don't like for people who read what I write to think I'm stupid.  (Remember, the red lines under words have a purpose.)

Yes I hate abbreviations, my daughter texted me one time after I aske her something with a IDK, it took  me goos 5 minutes to figure it out.  I try not to abbreviate, I do have the problem that my fingers are too fat and it gets in the  way of the keys and I end up texting things that makes not sense, so I go back and fix the issue. But I know someone who abbrev for absolutely everything, on emails and on letters and it drives me crazy.  The new generation has a very awful spelling trait and is going to get worse

I have more problems with business jargon abbreviations than I do with texting ones. For example, when I first started working for a manufacturing environment, I started hearing the abbv. PCR. While I was going to school for biology, PCR is the abbv. for Polymerase Chain Reaction: a method for copying large amount of DNA from a small sample. But since we weren't copying DNA in this manufacturer, I couldn't for the life of me figure out what that meant. In a more business setting, esp. in manufacturing or construction, PCR stands for a Procedure Change Request to formalize a change in a customer's request for the work they want done.

Yeah there are some used at work that after a year and a half I still don't know what they mean.

I really really really really hate that. It is lazy to do that and hard to read.

It's not lazy.  It is texting.  That is what texting is.

People seem to be missing that it is TEXTING!  It is not writing a letter.  Or filling out a job application.  You are correct in people do not know how to spell anything.  People also don't know how to use words.  People do not know the difference in (their, there, or they're) and like someone else said (half and have) or something like that.  People are just over all stupid.  And don't care.  Kids are also not taught English and Grammar in school any longer.  Even when I was in high school our English class was a literature class not an English class.

You know, you also have the option of telling the person who uses abbreviations that you don't want to see that.  Tell them you don't know what it means and ask them to write out the words.  If they don't comply then don't respond.

It would be a good idea to have a dictionary for these abbreviations. Sometimes I bump into a few of them not knowing what they mean.
