Your opinion- hand made greeting cards....
« on: July 12, 2015, 08:11:36 am »
I make handmade embellished greeting cards and would love to get some feedback on what people think they should be priced at (I sell at boutiques and festivals). It is very labor intensive, one card can take a few hours or just under an hour, depending. But labor aside, if you saw one what would you be willing to pay and why?

Thanks to much

I wouldn't ask more than $5 for each card. While it may take a long time to make them, most people wouldn't spend more than that on a card.

I like receiving hand made cards that are made by the person giving them.  I personally would not pay over a couple of dollars but that is just me.  I usually buy my cards for 50 cents at Dollar Tree.  Most people don't keep cards like they use to.

First of all anything "handmade" is completely special.  As far as price goes, I would probably pay $5.00 per card if the design was pleasing and the sentiment inside was something I felt appropriate.  After all, have you seen some of the "greeting cards" on the market today for $5.00?????  Sad!!!

I do handmade cards also, I sell them for $3, it does me no good to  try and make money if I take them back  home with me.

Handmade cards are lovely and can take time to create as you mentioned.  However, most people don't want to spend a lot of money on a card that won't be kept by the receiver.

$5.00-$7.00 per card is probably a fair price to ask depending on the labor involved.  Most people who buy handmade cards at festivals appreciate the talent and time involved and take that into consideration when purchasing these cards.

As 6265AT99 alluded to, there are a lot of "greeting cards" sold in box stores that cost in the $5 range that are not worth the money.

But  sdenimandlace1 has a valid point, that taking the cards home with you from the festivals, etc. does you no good.  Y

You may have to test the market at each festival to see what the going price for your cards will be and adjust accordingly.

I buy cards every now and then, the prices vary by size. Regular prices in NY goes anywhere from $2 - $5.
I saw an elder couple running a similar business in their basement using computer and printers delegated to
publishing.
Finding a way to do mass production, will save you time and increase production as well. Given your experience
majority of the job is done already.

I think originality is more impressive than how extensive the labor. If it catches my eye or states a message I want to get across, then I'll buy it. Probably nothing more than $7-8.

Fusion cash has taught me that every single cent earned or saved is the path to generating a secure financial future. I have diligently visited this site for close to six years and yet to spend anything that I have made on anything but investments and means of making additional passive income.  Last year my passive income far exceeded my on line income from sites like fusion cash (which is the best by far).  That being said I would not be a person that would spend more than ninety nine cents (plus tax) for a American Greetings greeting card. In fact I have been deferring to printing off line and electronically e-mailed card. I have seen cards like you have described in the boutiques that my wife frequents and I believe they were typically priced at around six to eight dollars.

I used to make handmade cards and sold them anywhere between $2.50 - $4.00 each. Just make sure you cover the cost of supplies.

My daughter and I make home made cards all the time. That way we can personalize according to the person. Can't tell you how much you should charge though. Just say keep in mind how much you are will to pay your self and go from there.

I have to agree with most others, people don't seem to be willing to pay a lot for greeting cards.  I would have to see the card and have it touch something in me to be willing to pay 5.00 for one card.   Have you tried selling on Etsy or Ebay?
