Job search
« on: September 14, 2015, 09:51:13 am »
Do you believe that people who have had their jobs for so many years understand how hard it is out there to get a job now? My in-law tells me all the time "...just go walk up and apply!", and I'm trying to tell them that it doesn't work that way much anymore. Most of the time, businesses say go apply online, but she doesn't believe me.  She's had both of her jobs forever!! Tell me what you think...I value your thoughts.

You are so right.  It's harder to get a job today than it was before.  You just don't go in and apply, you do about 90% of applications on line.  Also, for every one job opening there can be 1000 or more peopke applying.  There was a company here that had a few job openings ( kind of like a small job fair) in a company here and there were about 5000 people applying for it.  The paper showed lines and lines of people waiting to be interviewed.  I wish you the best of luck in finding a job.

It is harder to get a job. Try telemarketing if you can handle it. If you can talk to people that is a good asset.

I used to work for a Recruitment Consultancy and so have first hand experience of how applying for a job has changed. You have to be able to adapt if you want to keep up with society and applying for a job on line, is only the start of it. However, think how much you can impress someone by the information you give, whether this be online or by paper resume. If you created your resume yourself, you are handing over evidence of your creative handywork and if you apply on line, you are demonstrating your ability to use up to date and modern methods of IT. I wouldn't necessarily say one is out of date to be applying for a job in person. If, for instance, you are applying for a customer service job where you have personal interaction with customers, I would say that's the perfect time to introduce yourself. But be dressed for it and be ready to spill the beans on your academic achievements and abilities right there and then. By handing over a resume personally you are declaring how seriously you take the application process, which is attractive to an employer.

That's old fashioned. In this modern time you can use the internet for job search. Google and Yahoo are two good search engines for job search.

Jobs are much harder to come by now and you are right most places make you apply online. Good luck with your search!

There's more competition for jobs that are worth having, now.  Also, most employers want you to apply online; which means, an interested applicant must be comfortable using computers.

If you're really, really, really good at what you do you might have an advantage.
Have a great day!

If you're young enough, get a marketable skill.  I say a "marketable" skill.  Not a degree in Fine Arts.  Do your research.  Be prepared to invest in yourself and possibly work and study at the same time.  Be prepared to take on some debt to get that skill.  Learn about the "process" and "expectations" involved in getting a job.  I have talked with college graduates who are still unsure how to go about actually preparing for getting the job.

You are right: "Go there and apply does not work anymore!" Better try some employment placement agencies where the employer pays for everything...not you!

The temp services / or placement agencies are no better.  I have signed up with several.  They mostly want to build up their data base.  I signed up with one over a year ago.  They specifically told me verbally on the phone before I drove an hour to sign up they had jobs IN MY AREA to place people on THAT DAY.  I go and fill out the paper work and they say "oh we will call you if we have a fit for you".  SMH.

And you are right in how many other people apply for the same position.  I have applied to a couple lately and was told there was at least 30 other applicants.  And like I already said most times they already know who they are going to hire.  The apps and 3 interviews is just a formality to be on the right side of the law.

And I am not sure what you mean by "the employer pays for everything not you".  I have never paid anyone to hire me.
