I would  and have been known to ask to speak to the manger right then before the cashier was threw  ringing me up.  Does not bother me a bit.  The customer deserve the person full attention. The store would rather know right then and there if there is a problem then to lose customer because of it.

I'd call his boss after checking my purchases was correctly ringed out. I won't worry about it cuz, that guy will in the future probably be in prison for not paying his texting while in traffic! States are cracking down on texting while driving! !

I work in retail and would be shocked to see a cashier do this in my store.  I'm sure management wouldn't tolerate it.  They are probably very much aware and the problem is probably in the works of being dealt with.  Sometimes though it takes a customer complain directly to a manager for something to be done.  Something like that could steer me away from ever shopping in that store again.  And that is something management certainly doesn't want.

I haven't even read all the responses, but I can tell you I would walk down to the Customer Service desk and ask to speak to a manager. I would be very detailed regarding the lack of business-like behavior and inform them that this cashier needed to be told what is wrong, be given a chance to correct it, and fired if they didn't.  I would say I was going to look for this particular cashier the next time I come in and watch their behavior if they are working.  I would tell them I would report again if I saw the same behaviors and expect them to be fired.  I would also ask that my receipt be checked to make sure it was correct.

I went thru his line again, not on purpose, but when he was ringing me up I realized it was him.  He was really nice.  And I saw NO signs of his cell phone.  The problem is managers do it as well.  They all stay on their phones.  If you pay attention people, employees, every where are on their phones.  People are too attached to their cell phones.  You can work for a couple of hours without your phone.  If there is a true emergency then your family has a way of contacting you.  You know, like we did back before everybody had their phones up their butts constantly.

Cell phone obsession has become ridiculous!!!  You'd think that people can't live without them, often talking to people they just talked to an hour or two prior.  Frankly, I don't want to be connected to everyone everyday.  Give me some peace and solitude sometimes.  Also, know when it is appropriate to be using your cell phone.

If I saw a manager on duty I would say something, but if not just take my completed purchase and know that the cashier will not be there long, they have security cameras all over and when the higher ups see that that person is gone!!!

Yes they have security cameras.  But they do not review them just for the heck of it.  If there are no problems they don't look at them.

I don't have an issue with talking to someone you just talked to an hour ago.  I do that.  My problem is when people are so involved in their phone they are oblivious to the world around them.  When you can't put your phone down long enough to do your job, conduct a transaction as a customer or whatever.

Also with all of the phones even cheaper ones having video cameras people are constantly videoing everything.

I would would attempt to take the phone out of his hand and tell him to do his job or I will report him to his supervisor.    These people are on the front lines of the company. Management wants to know about this rude behavior.  If he were properly apologetic I might not report him to management.

You DO NOT reach and take the phone out of their hand.  Complain to management or corporate - yes.  Smart off to them if you feel the need.  But I would never reach and take the phone away from them.  Think about how angry you would be if someone done that to you.  The way I handled it worked.  I complained to an assistant manager that night.  Came home and called corporate.  They reviewed the video.  And I am assuming the texts he was writing.  He did get in trouble.  And he was written up.  In his defense I have seen the managers right above him doing the same thing.  If your head cashiers are texting at the register then why would he think he couldn't do it?  I told the lady at corporate there is a real problem with employees all over the store being on their phones.  But it is not just this store.  It is ALL of them.  Pay attention next time you go in any store or restaurant.

If I incurred such disrespect, I would immediately call the manger/supervisor.  Text on your own time, or possibly that person did not want a job.
