College
« on: August 07, 2017, 02:15:56 pm »
My parents have been pressuring me lately on choosing a major in college, telling me viable jobs in the future, etc.
My passion is film, but thats hardly a stable job now, probably even less so in our future. My dad says I should do nearoscience because thats the future of brainwashing lol.
Im thinking of just going into psychology. It's a science for people who wanted to take art.

Good luck to you! I think that a bachelor's degree is good for networking unless the degree is very specialized like pre-med, engineering, being a pilot or accounting. I think that better schools often more doors as well. Lately one's work history and community service efforts play a larger role in getting a job. I graduated with a double major and work in a work force that is saturated with attorneys. I do not think that many of them will have their student loans paid off in under twenty years. The people that move ahead in my day time job are those that work hard and apply for designations that are more in line with the work tasks being performed. I make a very generous salary but work too many hours. My son heads off to college in two weeks as a freshman with no clue as to what he wants to do. He is good in math, fluent in Mandarin and I think that he would make a fine commercial pilot ($200,000 starting pay) which his counselors had told him to pursue. My daughter has wanted to be a patent lawyer for Engineers and is currently in her third year of engineering at a school ranked in the country's top three. My money is on her right now.

Can I give you some tough love? Pick a major that's going to get you a job. As much as I love and appreciate the arts, there just isn't a lot of money in the profession for 90-some percent of people who pursue it. What about nursing? Almost guaranteed a job, $60K out of school and lots of upward mobility? I'd consider it.

In a tough economy, go for "where the jobs are!"
   College major=Jobs supply

you need to do something that is going to make you happy. you cant work at a job that you will hate all your life or you wont be happy. you wont feel fulfilled  and being miserable for years on in isn't good for anyone.

your parents will eventually understand when they see that you are happy with what you have chosen and that you can work and provide for youself.

My oldest daughter waited too and then she picked something and was not happy in the work field (2 years) and had a hard time finding a job that fit her major.  She quit her job and moved back home and started over in the nutrition field and just received her master's degree.  She is now waiting until next Monday to take the RD exam and hoping to pass so she can start her life over.   Take your time and make sure it is what you really want.

college is a wonderful step to learn something that you want to actually  work at when you graduate.  my daughter took courses in social work and was able to get a great job when she graduated.  She hated school but was so grateful that went to college when she graduated high school.  I was so proud jof her.

I'm i n college at 42 years old. will graduate with my associates degree when I'm 44 and then proceed towards my bachelors. so forth. majoring in youth ministry. I am glad I waited till I was older so my parents couldn't put pressure on me to pursue a major sometimes it takes awhile to know what you want to do. never let parents pressure you. do what you love to do. trust me many I talk to regret letting their folks put pressure on them to do something they don't want to do.

One thing many college kids don't investigate is the opportunities out there for a given major. I can't tell you how many kids I know that pursued a field that they love only to discover the dearth of opportunities out there. While it's wonderful to pursue your passions, there needs to be a healthy dose of pragmatism.

One thing I always tell kids is to keep up on their math skills. It will always leave the door open to more technically based pursuits even if they don't eventually pursue them. It's nice to have options.

Now I'll tell you what I tell my kids, get out there get a good job and take care of mom and dad!

Go with your passion. Go to Hollywood. Persevere. Make a name for yourself.

Don't go to college because someone is pressuring you to go. College is not for everyone.

I wish you all the best. I think it's wonderful that you have a passion for something. That's a real blessing.

My daughter is going through the same deal trying to decide on a major.  You need to study something you like so you can get a job that you like.

Unless it's in something specialized, look for your kids future jobs to be in something else.
