Hummingbirds
« on: October 04, 2017, 01:20:43 pm »
I know it's the end of summer when my hummingbirds stop coming to my feeders.   They have begun their migration.  I enjoy watching them each spring throughout the summer.   I'll leave my feeders up for a few more weeks for those who may be passing through on their way south.   See you next spring little ones.

I removed mine this weekend.  I love seeing them, but haven't in a few weeks, so I figured they left already.  I'm like you, I'll see them next year.

Hummingbirds are wonderful creatures, but too daring sometimes. Large Praying Mantis sometimes hang-out on feeders. They can and will attack and eat hummers. I'm referring to mantids that are approximately 2-1/2" and larger. The hummers try to pick them off the feeder, may end up becoming dinner if grabbed... Just check periodically that none are near the feeders. Heres a link: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/2017/06/mantis-hummingbirds-predation-photograph-animals/

I didn't know this, interesting article.  Thanks for the information.  I did have a writing spider that kept building a web right by my feeder.  I kept knocking it down afraid the hummers would get caught in it.  It just kept building it back.

I didn't get to see many hummingbirds this summer and that was disappointing. I love the tiny cute hummingbirds.

When I put out my hummingbird feeder last year, it was always covered with bees. Now I like bees but I wanted to see my hummingbirds. So I did a fix I found on youtube and it didn't work.

So now I am not even going to bother with it anymore. I do still see the occasional one in my yard and I enjoy that fleeting moment. They are so cute.  :in-love:

Say it aint so!  I only see hummingbirds every once in a while.  But I have family out in Arkansas and they have an absolute ton of them.  Pretty cool watching them when i'm out there.

Sadly, I never see any hummingbirds in my area  :( I really wish I did. I absolutely love them. They're beautiful creatures.

Do you keep your feeders full in the winter?  Mammaw had some that was there all winter.

I pulled my feeders  yesterday,  we could have a freeze  by the end of the month and I  don't want to be feeding any of them  now hoping they head south.  Right now  we are getting rain every day and  looks like today is going to be a rough one.  Twenty miles away the lake has already received an inch in less then and hour. Of course over the lake they receive a lot more and  right now it is lapping at the spillway. so they are fixing to  release some. We live in the high dessert and rarely have this much rain. But is does happen  once in a while. like  already  at our place we are standing at 3 "  in 4 days

That's so sweet.  We only have a few humming birds a year because we have several cats outside that we feed.  Kind of makes it hard to keep birds and squirrels around.

I had no idea that praying mantis got so big.  Thanks for sharing the nationalgeographic link.  A google search produced youtube videos as well.  Nature is so cool!

No, not all winter.  I keep it up for about 2-3 weeks after I've seen the last hummingbird.
