Being a special needs parent the word "retarded" is very harsh and feel it is a hate word. I will confront someone who says the word.

God, stupid anything underlying cuss word.  I'm embarrassed when I'm talking to customers and they use cuss words.  It makes me want to duck and hope nobody else heard what was said.  Some language I hear seems almost normal for some people and it bothers me.  I'm no saint, I say my share of cuss words.  But I try not to do it in the public eye where children don't need to hear it, elderly don't want to hear it.  and anyone in between who doesn't want to hear it.

I have several.  They are shut-up, stupid, dumb and retarded.  I have that word retarded because it is so degrading.  Also my step-grandkids are half black and half white.  They are always saying *bleep* and I can't stand to hear that word.

I do not think of any of those words as bad words. And people are wicked. Very wicked. Sometimes people scream. It is a description of how someone was talking. Same with slap. It is a description of something that happened.

People are too offended by words these days.

Again, I think that is foolish. I do not understand how using the word retarded is offensive if a person is.  It is not a bad word. It is a description of a person with certain mental issues.  It is not harsh and it is not a hate word.  I have worked with mentally retarded people in the past.  It is not an insult to them.  Personally, I feel mentally challenged or whatever does not offend the snowflakes if offensive.  People just look for reasons to be offended.

I will agree the word "retard" has been used in many different ways and sometimes people say it about and to people as an insult. But guess what...so has Christian.  I have been called a "Christian" in a snarly bad tone and as an insult more than once.  Doesn't make it a bad word.

I find this whole thing interesting.  I looked through the words that people have listed and every single one of them can be strong depending how it is used.  And those same words could be harmless with no strength at all if they were used a different way.  The exact same is true for swear words.
