What do you think...
« on: October 23, 2018, 04:50:07 am »
I helped separate some clothes yesterday that had been donated to an organization that works with low income families.
At some point once a year the families can look at the clothes and take what they need.  The stuff that had been donated was horrible.  It was nasty old clothes that was stained and full of holes. Most of it looked like it should have been thrown away long ago.

I made a comment to the person I was working with who defended the stuff that had been donated.  Personally I would not donate anything that I would not wear myself.  It baffles me at how people will donate something that looks so horrible and say oh it is okay for somebody else to wear.

Just curious - what do you think about this?  It made me mad that people donate something that needs to be thrown away and say it is good enough for low income people to have.

Yeah, if it's stained and full of holes, that's pretty low. And then they probably wrote it off on their taxes as a charitable donation, when really they just dumped off their trash.  >:(

I only donate clothes I no longer can wear, like I gained weight or lose some weight.  Shoes I no longer where, like the heels are too high or hurt my feet.  I think you should not donate nasty dirty things.

I always make sure my donations are clean and in good shape.  If you're going to donate trash, donate it to the landfill.

I believe if it's something you would not wear because of holes, stains, rips throw it don t donate it.  The people who are getting it have pride, they are just down in their luck for different reasons.  Why make them feel worse by giving them stained or ripped clothing.  The clothing we donate are things we no longer want but are in good condition.  Don't give crappy clothing put yourself in their place would you want stained or ripped items?

I work in a shelter where we get a lot of donations.  It always amazing me that some people donate things that should have been thrown out long ago.  Personally I never donate anything ripped, stained or raggedy looking  :) :) :)

Absolutely deplorable why not just throw it away. It is just to make themselves feel good.  Same with food donations people donate out of date (WAY out of date) moldy whatever.  It is shameful.

You are so right.  A few years ago I was helping packing boxes for people’s Thanksgiving dinner.  The food was donated and in checking the can goods and bread cubes (for filling) so many were out of date and I mean months.  Why do people do that?  Would you honestly eat something 6 months old?  Why would you think poor people would or should? Disgusting

I look over everything I plan to donate to be sure that the items are suitable for reuse.  If an article of clothing is torn, stained or faded, I turn them into cleaning rags.

There does come a time when clothing has to be permanently retired. Stains and holes really should be unacceptable for donated items.

If things have stains or holes they go in the trash. I donate things that I simply don't wear, not because it is garbage.

I work at a charity where we take clothes, house hold gods and others stuff, You would  be amazed at  what some people  donate. and yes a lot of it is  dirty or nasty. Like they don't care. We do not have a washer or dryer for these items. Once in a while if they are  nice  just  dirty I will bring them home and wash and dry them. But some is just down right too nasty to mess with. if they are tore up we just  dump them. Why  they don't dump them themselves I don't know.

I think that is terrible. You should not donate anything that you would not wear yourself. Its sad to know that some people donate dirty clothes.

It never hurts to go by the golden rule.  If you wouldn't be happy, yourself, to get the item, then you shouldn't donate it.
