I Have More Than 5 Pets, Why Do I Keep Getting DQ'D?
« on: March 19, 2019, 07:26:56 pm »
This is the lighter side of the situation rather than a rant.  I'm noticing that virtually every time I attempt a survey about pets and the question is asked as to how many pets I own, I honestly say more than 5 ( because it's true ) then I am immediately dq'd.

At first I was a bit aggravated.  Now I just go through the motions and anticipate the dq.  I used to think that market research would love to hear my opinions about pet products based on my vast experience with more than 5 pets.   ???

Now I just laugh it off thinking that they look at me as some kind of nut case with a whole bunch of pets.   :cat: :cat: :cat: :dog: :dog: :dog:

Has anybody else ever wondered about this sort of thing?

I am retired from market research and we did a lot of projects on and about pets. The clients were always looking for a certain profile. Often they were looking for pet owners who had at least one pet but less than a certain amount. You may have too many pets or net enough of a specific pet like a cat or dog.

I always get a chuckle out of the "survey for dog owners" and as soon as I click "I have a dog", I am DQ'd.  I know that the survey titles don't always match the content, but its good for a laugh (and a penny)

I dq for surveys I thought I was good for and have completed ones I had no qualifications for, but you never know exactly what the researchers are wanting

I think that the client is looking for a representative market, through due diligence, for a product they are hoping will sell and become a house hold name. The American Veterinary Medical Association conducted a pet census labeled the US Pet ownership statistics and found that thirty six point five percent of all house holds (43,460,000 households) owned one point six dogs. I have two dogs and know, first hand, that they can be an expensive proposition: food, treats, training, grooming, toys, veterinarian visits, and time spent with each dog. They need walks in the morning and evening. I would probably not be a good candidate because I have two dogs and it is difficult to switch their diet or habits. This would be easier for neighbors across the way as they do not provide any attention to their three dogs that are let out at four in the morning/eleven at night and left to bark for an hour each time.

I have had that happen in the past when it asked how many dogs I had and I would answer 6 and always got DQ'd. I guess I couldn't have more than 5. I only have 3 now so it seems to let me start the survey now, even if I am dq'd later in the survey.

I always get disqualified because apparently no one cares about the opinion of parrot owners...lol. The only pet I have is a parakeet and I intend to get a cockatiel once I move. I guess we are both the crazy pet owners that market researchers don't need to hear from. Oh well, there are other survey opportunities out there.

Very interesting and informative responses.  Thank you everyone.  The information shared by all of you makes total sense.

By the way, annadote, I care about your opinions as a parrot owner.  All pets matter to me so I would, without a doubt, never disqualify you.  Unfortunately, I'm not in market research so I can't qualify you for a survey.

I just hope that simply knowing that pets are important will somehow make a difference to you.  ;)

I've been disqualified from surveys all the time. All we can do is to keep trying.

Yeah, it's happened to me too. They must think you're a crazy person for having more than 3 pets? I dunno, but I get DQed too.

This just goes to show they only want the answers they want not someones real opinion. This happens all the time not just the pet surveys. It is a real shame your getting DQ'd  because I have gotten free dog food, dog treats and toys for my dog from these surveys. I don't always get to qualify either it is a 50 50 chance at best.

One of the responses to my post was from a former marketing research individual.  He talked about marketers looking for a small range of pets.  I guess that's what companies are looking for.

My thought has always been; who better to interview about pets than someone who owns more than 5.  I may have a whole bunch of opinions about foods, treats or supplies that would fit any questionnaire.

Well at least you are able to earn free dog supplies from your efforts.  I'm real happy for you.  It works out for me too as I use some of my online earnings to treat my babies.
