Punctuation and spelling are important!
« on: April 30, 2019, 05:41:09 pm »
Could be the difference between

Helping your Uncle Jack off a horse
and
Helping your uncle jack off a horse

OR

Wanted:  One-night stand
and
Wanted:  One nightstand

Just sayin'

I agree that both spelling and punctuation are important.  If you get online and read may of the posts, it is a little scary how many people have no idea about grammar.  It seems it is getting to be a lost art.  My last job before I retired had may written reports that had to be submitted to agencies and one of the reason I was hired included this skill.  I had several employers in the past who demanded a writing sample as part of the employment process. These employers later told me they actually excluded people occasionally because the applicant could not write a literate paragraph.

A lot of stuff regardless of punctuation can mean more than one thing depending on emphasis on the words and how you take it.  A lady at church last night was upset about a billboard she saw and how it is just horrible.  I did not think the sign was bad.  I actually saw the sign today.  There is a website on the sign and if you go to the website you realize what the sign is saying.  Which I actually got on my own.

She took it as something bad.  I did not.  And the people behind the sign did not mean it in a bad way.

Some people don’t spell so well, but that shouldn’t always have to affect the context. I still usually know what people mean when they make noticeable typos.

I agree both are important. However, if someone uses it incorrectly you usually understand what they are trying to say.

I agree that spelling and punctuation are important. I also find your examples of that amusing. I sometimes find reading stuff in this forum to be difficult because people are such bad spellers and misuse punctuation too.

I do agree with the rgammar and spelling...So many people aren't taught that in school now a days..My 2 granddaughters are now almost 15 and 18...I taught them cursive as soon as they started learning to write...They don't teach that in schools today...How are they going to sign a check when cashing it..

And some people never really think to look for errors before it’s too late to fix those errors!

When you post online using a computer the incorrectly spelled words are underlined in RED. So there is no excuse for not fixing it.  Some people are lazy. It doesn't have anything to do with no spelling so well.  As an adult you should be able to spell simple words.

I guess it depends on the school.  They do teach cursive here.  As far as signing a check - that is an obsolete thing.  If you work you get paid 99% of the time with direct deposit.  So it is all electronic.  I cannot remember the last time I 'cashed a check' .

Red, squiggly lines actually indicate that a computer doesn’t recognize a word. The word might be real. The computer just wouldn’t know what the word means.
