St. Patrick's Day Meal
« on: March 03, 2020, 06:01:54 pm »
i grew up very near Chicago back in the '60s and '70s when the original Mayor Daley was in office. Every year there was a huge St. Patrick's Day parade and just about everyone I knew had a special St. Patrick's day supper. We would ALWAYS have corned beef and cabbage, some kind of bread, and some kind of green dessert. I remember one year it was green Rice Crispy treats, homemade of course. Since I've lived in Georgia (41 years), I hear of very few families having a special St. Paddy's Day meal. I got my husband, who is a born and raised Georgian, into the habit of making my special supper and we haven't looked back!

Do you and your family do anything special for a St. Patrick's meal?  :peace:  :clover:

I grew up in New Jersey and it was a big deal there too. My husband is from Chicago and same there too. We have lived in CA for a very long time now and when my daughter was younger we used to always have special St. Patty's day meal at home. Corned beef and cabbage, carrots, potatoes, soda bread and of course some type of green dessert. In the last 5 years or so we stopped as it is very hard to even find corned beef for the occasion. We have a few decorations for the home, as we like decorating for many of the holidays.

I always tried to make corned beef and cabbage every year in my 34 year marriage because although I liked it - it was definitely one of my husbands very favorite meals.  Since he has passed I really haven't had the heart to make it although I thought about making it this year.

We have been having corned beef and cabbage for as long as I can remember. It is only once a year so I don't mind it.

No special meal for us on St. Patrick's Day. My mom used to make corned beef and cabbage and I didn't like it. I was one of the pickiest little eaters you ever could know. I can eat it now but really don't care to if given a choice.

Green beer is kind of fun. Do you count that?

Besides, I think that St. Patrick's Day is just another day people use in order to drink a lot more.  :dontknow: What say you?

We live a south suburb of Chicago still go the the South Side parade down Western Ave.  Ours kids also still attend the parade then come back to our house for traditional corn beef dinner with boil potates, cabbage and sour dough bread.
