College Online tuition cost the same?
« on: May 18, 2020, 09:39:42 am »

 :glasses-nerdy:..

Now the question is do the kids get a college education for the same amount of money online as they do in a physical school setting?

As college campuses across the country remain closed amid social distancing orders, graduating high school seniors and their families are stuck with a difficult question: Is college worth the price if classes are online? In turn, the American Council on Education predicts that fall enrollment could decrease by 15 percent or more, leaving colleges and universities with an estimated $23 billion in lost tuition. David Klein, CEO and co-founder of CommonBond, a finance company that specializes in affordable student loans, explains that there may, in fact, be a silver lining here — pressure to enroll students could force universities to address the college tuition crisis that existed long before the coronavirus.

Why would it cost less? You are paying for the knowledge you are gaining. You are paying for the classes.  The only thing that should cost more is if you stay in a dorm and eat there.  The knowledge and degree should be worth the same to you no matter how you get it. A lot of people who go to college and then owe a lot of money and cannot get a job go for something ridiculous that you can't get a job when you get out any way.  Like some woman going for "Women's Studies".  Yeah you got a degree but what are you going to do with it.  I remember a guy years ago went to be a gym teacher and then was upset when he was working at McDonald's when he got out of school.  Obviously he wasn't smart enough to be in college anyway.  You also need to look at the jobs in your area and are you willing to move.  There are not a lot of opportunities where I live.  If you go to college for anything worthwhile you will be moving some where else.

College tuition also covers overhead expenses such as: Utilities (electric, water, gas), interior (and exterior) building maintenance, security, Administrative expenses related to scheduling classes and class rooms, exterior landscaping maintenance, Sports programs, scholarships to name a few and all of which benefits those that are attending a brick and mortar college. Online tuition should be considerably less with the lions share of the tuition going to the professors. Online courses/college diminish the prestige associated with big ten and Ivy league schools. You can get an online education anywhere. You are still gaining knowledge at the same rate but you are losing the connections that most bachelor's degrees offer.

I am of the opinion that online classes should cost somewhat less.

I don't know why but online classes cost about $25 more than in-person classes, my daughter is a College student and that is how I know.  I believe they should be less since you are doing it almost on your own but that is life for you

I guess it depends on the college.  I have never heard of it costing more.  My cousin is going full time online and it is expensive but seemed comparable with going in person.  Not sure how you are doing in on your own.  You have a teacher and a time for the class.  Yeah you do the assignments on your own. But rarely did any college course I had have you do many things in person other than being in the class.  And of course taking tests.

I did have a couple classes that were "independent study" and it was significantly cheaper for those classes.  There was a woman who called herself a teacher who sat in the room but you had the books and you moved at your own pace and done all the work yourself. We did have a specific start time and end time for class.  You sat there with books in front of you at a desk.   She was there if you had a question but usually most just asked a classmate as the "teacher" was worthless.

I can see people think it should cost less but the professors get paid the same. Doesn't really matter. Don't see why anybody needs a college degree to hide in their homes.  :silly:

I would think online would be cheaper because there are costs involved with the physical presence of a university and having students there. Online can easier in some ways, but there are some downsides too such as the personal interactions that can be formed in person. If you're disciplined or want to juggle many responsibilities, online can be appropriate, but as I'm sure many people have learned, it can be a lot harder to focus while working remotely.

I do not work remotely but honestly I think it would be fine. I do not think there would be any more distractions that there are in the work place.  Probably less.  Nobody stopping by to chat or having to deal with people being loud and cutting up around you. Assuming that bothers you.  The last job I worked on where that was an issue I just closed my door and if it got to be too big of a thing I would just take a break and walk outside for a few and get away from it.  But usually I was good at tuning it out.

I wouldn't expect colleges to give away any discounts on tuition. If everything is online, students would save on room and board.
