interesting phrase meaning deep sleep....
....most people (unless you are a person who snores)
are quiet when they sleep. you don't make a "sound" (noise).

I don't think of my self as a deep sleeper. I am to aware of the sounds around me and if 1 of my girls get up from bed I am aware of it. And the only time I realy snore is when I am having an allergy attack and cant breathe or if I am absolutley drop dead tired.

I think people can sleep "lightly" when they are the responsible one for the others in the house.

When the kids were babies, I heard every sound so I would wake to take care of their needs.

As teenagers, my husband had "his ears on" more than me and heard the door when the kids came home....I could sleep since I knew he "was on duty."

I drop to sleep everso quickly.  The reason; I go to bed at the same time every day and I also wake up at the same time each day.  My son sleeps so quietly that I feel sure he sometimes stops breathing for a few seconds!  My husband snores so loudly I'm convinced he snores and burps at the same time! Ewww

Some people used "fast asleep" which is the same as sound asleep. But they are not sleeping fast. LOL They are just in a deep sleep that you don't want to wake them up because they will get angry or cranky. Especially when they are sound asleep watching TV. Hahaha True story!

I'm definitely a deep/sound sleeper.  WW3 could start outside my window over night and I would be clueless.   ;D

Some people make really loud breathing noises when they sleep...
