Good Luck Foods
« on: December 31, 2009, 10:08:43 am »
Well, I am already cooking up and eating some foods that are said to bring you good luck in the New Year.  I have roasted and tasted a cabbage head.  I have eaten some herring and later some black eyed peas.    Any other suggestions on what I should eat to guarantee me good luck in 2010?

Sauerkraut is the good luck food in our house. If you can't stand the smell, try putting brown sugar in it to make a "sweet kraut". That's how my mom had to get me to eat it when I was little.

The brown sugar really takes the sour right out, but gives it a nice flavor. I now love kraut as it is supposed to be, but as a kid... no way until I had it like this.

Don't have any good luck foods....we always do crab legs and fondue but, our family has a funny tradition.  No one knows how is got started but we are all afraid not to comply.  Each new years day, we make a pillowcase and sleep on it to insure the financial good fortune of our family.  Don't know what it has to do with what but we all do it and nobody has starved yet.  My sister even did hers by hand in the hospital waiting to have her baby.  Yeah, I guess we take it seriously!

This is exactly what my mom used to make us eat every New Year's Day, for just the same reasons.

i've never heard of good luck foods on new year's eve. is this from a certain culture, or maybe the region you live in? i find it very interesting and would love to hear more about. maybe i can start a similar tradition for my own family for next year! :)
