First of all let me say I really love your icon.

Guess I was about 14 and I was a paper carrier, which back then, girls weren't allowed, so it had to be put in my brother's name, who I also had to pay to help me on Sunday.

As I got older I became quite popular in my hood as a dependable babysitter and did quite well.

I think every kid is different though, for example, my sons all three went to work during high school in fast food. But when my daughter tried it she hated it and couldn't believe people could be so mean...so it depends on the kid.

Maybe the 14 year old should try babysitting for awhile, though. Oh yeah my daughter made extra money by tutoring younger children.

:) I started doing arts & crafts when I was eleven years old. I knitted a white wool vest for me to keep me warm in school rooms. I knitted other sweaters when I was that young. My first paying job was when I was nineteen doing secretarial work. I had a lot of fun in this first assignment.

I started babysitting full time during the summer when I was 10 and did that every summer until I was 16 and legal to hold a tax paying job. Then I got a job at Sonic making tips during weekday nights until 10 PM since its illegal to work later if your in school until you graduate or unless its summer and held that job until after I graduated high school

Hello everyone, SOme of you already know that I have 2 teen girls. well the both want to get jobs and I don't know if i'm ok with that. How old were you and if you have older kids or teens how old were they when they started working and what advice can you give me to feel a little better about this :( I still see them as my babies  :'( and don't want to let them go. I mean I know i have to and I know I will just want to get some input lol
I am in the babyboomer generations, so things have changed from when I grew up in the 60's. I started working at the age of 12, not much, paperboy and snow removal, yard work. My kids that grew up in the 80's were 15 - 16 respectively. I think you need to let them work - even if it is parttime. It gives them a sense of worth and responsibility. They learn to earn and spend (moderately) with their own money. As long as you give them rules as far as saving and spending. This should carry them into a "common sense" adult, as far as financial independance.

I was twelve when I started cutting lawns for cash. At thirteen I had a few painting gigs set up. At fourteen I worked with horses at a track in Illinois. At fifteen I had three jobs and increased that to four jobs when I was in college which I worked my way through. I am currently working three jobs but looking to knock it down to two.  This online stuff has been a nice supplemental income with which to make worry-free investments.

At 18 years old I got a real job going into college. When I was a teenager I made some money taking care of our property mowing, clearing brush and other odd jobs.

I was fourteen years old when I started pushing a lawn mower around to make money.  That fall I went to work as a concession cook at a drive in theater.  So yes I started working in my teenage years.  But as a parent of teenage girls I will warn you to keep your eyes on them.

I first started working when I was 18 in college. My mom wouldn't let me work in high school.
