Sometimes I tip sometimes I don't.  If the waitress can't make ends meet on tips they need to get another job.  A tip should not be mandatory just because you do your job it is for service that goes above and beyond and most people don't do anything above and beyond that justifies any tip IMHO.  Filling my water glass and asking me how my food is once is not going above and beyond it's simply the job they are paid to do.

How far does tipping have to go?  Are we supposed to tip doctors, policemen, the cable guy, cashiers?  Where is the line drawn?

I always leave a tip, but I think that it is terrible the businesses are allowed to pay below minimum wage expecting the public to pay their wages.

I tip even if it makes it harder for me to make ends meet.  I am a working mom of 2 boys and from time to time I can take them out to eat and we always leave a tip even if its only a dollar.  Something is better than nothing for doing there job.  Come on people.

If they are doing their job.  The purpose of the hospitality industry, and just about every other industry for that matter, is to exceed the expectations of the customer.  So many people are just interested in squeezing through with the minimum needed to meet expectations.  This usually leads to not meeting those expectations at all.  Now, there are quite a few servers out there who do very well at their job, and they shouldn't be subject to people who don't want to tip, but there are also those out there who don't do what is necessary to earn that tip.  My standard has always been:  current gratuity %, adjusted up for very good service, or adjusted down for very poor service.

I always leve something.

Good service gets a good tip.
Average service gets an average tip.
Bad service gets a low tip.

I over tip if the service was good. I usually do 10% for lousy service.
