« on: September 11, 2010, 01:22:31 pm »
                                                                         Strange facts

1. In medieval Japan, fashionable women blackened their teeth to enhance their appearance.

2. During the reign of Peter the Great, there was a special tax on anyone with a beard.

3. The heart of a whale beats only nine times a minute.

4. A deer botfly travels at 800 mph, flying faster than a jet plane.

5. Sutoku, an Emperor of Japan, copied the Lankauru Sutra, a 10,500 word Buddhist tract, in his own blood.

6. Suicide was a crime in the 19th century England. Those who failed attempting it were put to death by hanging.

7. The female black widow spider devours the male after mating.  She may kill as many as 25 males a day.

8. To improve their appearance, some modern Hindu women stain their teeth bright red.

9. In 16th century Turkey, coffee drinking was punishable by death.

10. Even with its head cut off, the cockroach can live for several weeks. EW

Or perhaps, the death penalty might come from them trying to pry my coffee mug out of my hand first thing in the morning.....

Those remind me of a couple I have heard of (courtesy of "Robin's Web"):

The phrase "rule of thumb" is derived from an old English law which
stated that you couldn't beat your wife with anything wider than your thumb.

An old law in Bellingham, Washington, made it illegal for a woman
to take more than three steps backwards while dancing!

A rat can last longer without water than a camel.
