Justice
« on: March 02, 2011, 08:35:57 pm »
Every week I find in my email a brief discussion on the week's Torah portion from my rabbi.  This week, there were two lines that stood out to me, and I felt the need to share it with D&D and ask for an open conversation.  What do you think about this?  What does it mean to you?

Quote
Justice is not a political concept; rather it is a religious mandate. Where oppression rules, we have a God based obligation to free the captive.

Tawk amongst yaselves.

I agree with the fact we need to help oppressed people within the realms of our capability; however, I'm not so sure it's a religious obligation.  It may simply be a moral obligation.  If you look at human history, you constantly see one group trying to oppress another.  This was not God's choice, but our choice as humans.  Therefore, I think we all need to look at our behavior and try to live with love and tolerance.  I believe in God; I also believe in Karma.  If we all lived by the Golden Rule, what a world it would be.

I feel like Maude in "Harold and Maude."  You and me, jaymz, should take to liberating the canaries.  Maybe the world really does just love a cage... ;)

The only Justice in this country is what you can afford to pay for. IF you got enough money you can get away with anything. OJ Simpson proved that.

That delusion of justice " IF you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed for you."  IS INSANE. Most ALL court appointed lawyers just want you to take a deal. They never want to try your case, because it so much easier for them, the prosecutor and the entire system. If you don't take the deal, you always end up getting a much worse sentence, UNLESS you have a MIRACLE and are found NOT GUILTY.

I just had a court appointed lawyer on a traffic ticket and he did not have anough sense to get in out of the dammed rain. I do not know how he ever passed the state bar exam.
