Kids do that when playing. It's their imaginations and creativity, kind of like they're narrating their play time. I remember when my cousin was little, she used to babble a lot when playing off on her own. I guess it also depends on what it is they're doing too, because sometimes she wouldn't be making any noise at all and others she was really loud. I don't think it's anything to worry about, but listen to what they say because sometimes it can be really funny. (:

I think a lot of kids do this, so I wouldn't worry. I'd even narrate my own "baseball games" (I just threw a ball again a wall that had a strike zone taped out) when I was just entering Kindergarten.

My sister had a friend that used to talk to herself. But her mother started getting concerned because she seemed to always be talking about "coffee". She called up my mother to see whether my mom drank a lot of coffee, just trying to figure out where that word was coming from. The mothers eventually realized that she was actually misspeaking my sister's name "Kathy". Yeah, they can be cute if you listen to them!

I've always talked to myself growing up, and still as an adult.  Often during play it was me creating a universe and I was basically narrating the story.  Or practicing conversations as I was mimicking something I saw somewhere.

In college, I did a lot of talking to myself while I was learning other languages - basically having conversations with myself as practice.  Out of college those conversations got really weird as I started forgetting words and the languages started mixing up ... switching between languages... sometimes in the same sentence - lol.

I also talk to myself when I'm trying to figure out a solution to a tough problem or puzzle - sometimes my brain runs so fast with solution options, that talking them through out loud helps me sort the options and slow my brain down so I can think more clearly (without my brain spiraling off like a runaway train).

With your child, it could be a variety of reasons - try to listen and see how the talk fits with the play.  Might be fascinating to watch as this may be an opportunity to watch you child learning how to learn.

I have a very young child and while she is playing she is always talking to her self. I really don't remember talking to my self a child. :)

She sorta talks to herself and mutters under her breath a lot. It's actually kinda creepy!
