The power of prayer is greatly underestimated in our country.  God is still in control contrary to man's belief.  The best comfort comes from a personal conversation with the Lord.
Have a wonderful day!

Nope. Though I'm glad that the person is wishing good fortune onto others, I think they're an excuse to not help out.

The way that most do it is simply passing the ball to relieve themselves of responsibility(or culpability) for their own destiny.

Well put. It get disgruntled when I hear about people praying for the people in Japan...it's nice that they care and all, but they're imposing their beliefs on a people who don't have the same and I think donating materials or money to helping them out is a truckload more important than, as you put it, relieving themselves of responsibility. Actions speak louder than words.

I know they are. But I also feel that if you pray and do not believe it will happen then it will not.

Prayers are only as powerful as the people praying; a weak-willed person praying for something, but not willing to lift a finger towards their goal themselves, makes the prayer worthless.  But prayers can give those that believe hope, and hope is a powerful thing in itself.  Hope can push people into trying, when they may otherwise have given up.

In the end though, it's a person's willingness to do something about a given situation that makes all the difference.

There are many people praying for those in Japan, they are not imposing their personal beliefs on a people who don't believe the same---they are simply praying to God.  Whatever beliefs those in Japan have, they are free to have.  As for donating materials & money, many believers DO donate quite a bit of both (along with those prayers) which is why the 700 Club's "Operation Blessing" is so often able to be on the scene delivering truckloads of supplies and hope in many disasters.  The supplies are given to those in need regardless of their beliefs, they are not obligated or even pressured to change beliefs in exchange for help.

I do agree with you, Sheryl.  Also, for a Christian, it's just seems natural to to automatically think of praying for a situation like that, when it happens.  For some people, praying is all they can do if they don't have an income, or sick, etc.  Then there are those who pray and send helpful items, and those who don't pray but send helpful items.  Compassion, whether Christian or non-christian, results in teamwork/action for others when they get knocked down.  :)

Prayer to God, offered in faith, can be very powerful. God answers prayer.
