A neighbor has taken up the drums and I can't get far enough away. Maybe I'll crank up the polka channel and go to a movie. Any other suggestions ?

Ear plugs, maybe?  If they are breaking any type of noise ordinance, you can call the police.

I once had a neighbor that played bluegrass music all night long, went to bed at about the time I got up for work. I had my son bring over rap and cranked it on the stereo while at work, they called the cops-!?

That is when I break out the New Kids on the Block songs and blast them just loud enough to annoy them, but not loud enough to annoy other neighbors.

Most cities have a noise ordinance. This is where if some one is constantly too loud after a certain amount of time you call the police station. They will come and give a warning the first time and usually a ticket the next. If you live in an apartment complex they also have rules about disturbing your neighbors and if the neighbor gets complained on enough they can get kicked out. Just check into the laws of your city or the rules of your apartment complex to see what the times are.

If they just took it up, or if it's one of their kids - could be just a phase and it may pass in a relatively short amount of time when the novelty wears off.  If they are practicing during daytime hours so they are not disturbing sleep or work functions (if you work from home), you may want to just endure it for now.

If they are playing at night keeping you up or during times that make work difficult, I'd suggest knocking on their door and explain how their practicing during certain times is causing problems for you and ask if they can practice at a different time.  Most neighbors tend to be understanding and accommodating.  Hopefully this will be the case and you can work out an arrangement that works for both of you.

If an arrangement is worked out and the drums still bother you, I'd look into the above suggestion about getting some ear plugs.   ;D
