I work on it for a several years.  Working in an doctor office though.  It's a very interesting field and I would recommend it though.  I think you deal with patients and insurances.  You meet a lot of interesting people.  As for me I really love it.

Is it easy to get started? How did you have to go about it when you first started? I am interested in doing more than one work at home. Since this is a very easy and quick thing to do, and getting the referals is an off site thing, I would like to know how you got started!

I've done MT since 1972 and it is NOT what it used to be. You get paid mere pennies now for editing voice recognition files. You would be much better off to do coding if you can pass the certification test. You can find schools on line and it will take you about a year or a little more to become certified. The test is very extensive and not easy but if you go through a school that prepares you for the test, you can do it. Please don't waste your time doing MT. It is not at all what it's cracked up to be anymore. Take it from someone who has done it for nearly 40 years and finally been beaten down by offshoring and voice recognition. Coding is very lucrative!

What exactly is the difference between MT and coding, job-wise.

MT involves listening to doctors dictate medical records. Many of them speak with foreign accents and are not easy to understand. You get paid by the line and if it is a voice recognition file you only get paid about 3 cents a line to edit the file. If you have to type the file, you get paid about 7 cents a line. It's hard work and you usually have to do a minimum per shift. Coding involves downloading an entire medical record and sorting through the record to match billing codes up to the billed treatments. That's just in a nutshell. You would need to have a thorough understanding of medical terminology to do either one. That is why you have to go to school to learn the terminology along with anatomy/physiology. You can learn a lot at mtstars.com.

I just started a medical coding and billing course at a school near me and I do enjoy it. I have a few people in my family that work in the medical field so it seemed a good fit for me but it's interesting and my teacher and the other students make it fun. Look into it definitely. The course is fast too.
